The Supreme Court of India and the Supreme Court of Bhutan have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen judicial cooperation between the two neighboring nations. A key feature of this agreement is a judicial exchange program where two Bhutanese law clerks will serve in the Supreme Court of India for a duration of three months. To ensure a fair and productive experience, these clerks will receive the same honorarium as their Indian counterparts, and the Supreme Court of India will bear all their travel expenses.

This initiative was officially announced by the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant. It follows a significant foundation laid in October 2025 during the visit of former Chief Justice B.R. Gavai to Bhutan. Beyond the exchange of personnel, the MoU focuses on broader judicial training, the integration of advanced technology in court proceedings, and overall capacity building. This partnership aims to foster a shared understanding of legal frameworks and improve the efficiency of judicial systems in both countries.
