🌍 About Kariba Dam

The Kariba Dam is a massive concrete arch dam built across the Zambezi River at the Kariba Gorge, forming a natural boundary between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The dam was completed in 1959 and stands at a height of 128 metres. It is a double-curvature concrete arch dam, designed to withstand immense water pressure while efficiently generating hydroelectric power.

💡 Key Features

The Kariba Dam plays a crucial role in supplying electricity to both Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is one of the most important power sources for the region.

The construction of the dam led to the formation of Lake Kariba, which is the world’s largest human-made lake by volume.

🌱 Significance of Floating Solar Project

The installation of a floating solar plant on Lake Kariba represents a major step toward sustainable energy. It helps:

  • Utilize unused water surfaces for power generation
  • Reduce evaporation from the reservoir
  • Complement existing hydropower generation

This hybrid approach of combining solar and hydropower will improve energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Lake Kariba
