🏨 CCPA Directs Hotels & Restaurants to Stop Extra Charges on Consumers
Recently, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has directed hotels and restaurants not to levy additional charges such as LPG charges or fuel cost recovery on consumers. This move aims to protect consumer rights and prevent unfair billing practices.

📜 About CCPA
The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 established the CCPA under Section 10 to safeguard consumer interests. This Act replaced the earlier 1986 law and was notified on August 9, 2019, coming into force on July 20, 2020.
The nodal ministry responsible for the implementation of this Act is the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.
⚖️ Functions and Powers of CCPA
The CCPA plays a crucial role in protecting and promoting consumer rights in India. It ensures that consumers are treated fairly and are not misled by businesses.
Its key functions include protecting, promoting, and enforcing the rights of consumers as a group under the law. It actively works to prevent unfair trade practices and takes strict action against false or misleading advertisements.
The authority ensures that no entity publishes or spreads misleading advertisements. It has the power to initiate class-action suits, which may include product recalls, refunds to consumers, and even cancellation of licenses of businesses if required.
To strengthen enforcement, the CCPA conducts investigations through its dedicated Investigation Wing, which is headed by a Director-General. It can order businesses to discontinue unfair practices, impose penalties, and take necessary steps for consumer welfare.
🏛️ Composition of CCPA
The CCPA is headed by a Chief Commissioner and includes two other commissioners. One commissioner looks after issues related to goods, while the other handles complaints related to services.
