📍 Location and Importance
Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Andhra Pradesh and forms part of the Godavari estuary, where the Coringa River meets the Bay of Bengal. It was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1978.
This region is ecologically important as it serves as a key breeding ground for Olive Ridley turtles along India’s coastline.
🌿 Vegetation and Flora
The sanctuary is known for its extensive mangrove forests and tropical dry deciduous vegetation. It holds the distinction of being the second-largest stretch of mangrove forests in India.
The flora mainly consists of mangrove species such as Rhizophora, Avicennia, and Sonneratia, which play a crucial role in coastal protection and biodiversity support.
🐾 Fauna Diversity
The sanctuary supports a rich variety of wildlife. It is home to endangered mammals like the smooth Indian otter, fishing cat, and jackal.
The mangrove ecosystem also provides habitat for numerous bird species, including the black-capped kingfisher, Brahminy kite, seagulls, reef heron, and sandpipers.
🐢 Importance for Olive Ridley Turtles
The coastal areas of the sanctuary serve as vital nesting grounds for Olive Ridley Turtle. Conservation of eggs ensures higher survival rates of hatchlings, contributing to the protection of this vulnerable marine species.
Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary Andhra Pradesh
