Recently, the Ministry of Defence signed important contracts for the procurement of the Tunguska Air Defence Missile System and for depot-level inspection of the P-8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft. This step strengthens India’s air defence and maritime surveillance capabilities.

The P-8I Poseidon is a long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft manufactured by Boeing for the Indian Navy. It replaced the older fleet of Tupolev Tu-142 aircraft.
The P-8I is a specialized variant of the P-8A Poseidon used by the United States Navy, customized to meet India’s operational requirements.
⚙️ Key Features of P-8I Aircraft
The P-8I is equipped with advanced sensors and weapons systems, making it capable of detecting and responding to a wide range of threats, including submarines and surface vessels.
It performs multiple roles such as anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), intelligence gathering, maritime patrol, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.
In terms of performance, the aircraft has a maximum take-off weight of 85,139 kg. It can reach a top speed of 789 km/h and operate at a maximum altitude of 12,496 metres. The aircraft has a range of more than 2,222 kilometres and can remain on station for around four hours, enabling sustained surveillance operations.
