सोमनाथ मंदिर भारत के सबसे प्राचीन और पवित्र शिव मंदिरों में से एक है। यह प्रभास पाटन में गुजरात के सौराष्ट्र तट पर स्थित है। यह भगवान शिव के 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से पहला ज्योतिर्लिंग माना जाता है।
सोमनाथ का अर्थ है “चंद्रमा के स्वामी”। पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, चंद्र देव ने भगवान शिव की आराधना करके अपने श्राप से मुक्ति प्राप्त की थी, जिसके बाद इस मंदिर की स्थापना हुई।
सोमनाथ मंदिर का इतिहास अत्यंत प्राचीन है। माना जाता है कि इसका उल्लेख प्राचीन पुराणों और धार्मिक ग्रंथों में मिलता है। यह मंदिर भारत की सांस्कृतिक और धार्मिक दृढ़ता का प्रतीक माना जाता है क्योंकि इसे कई बार आक्रमणकारियों द्वारा नष्ट किया गया, लेकिन हर बार इसका पुनर्निर्माण किया गया।
सबसे प्रसिद्ध आक्रमण 1025 ईस्वी में महमूद गजनवी द्वारा किया गया था। इसके बाद भी विभिन्न शासकों के समय मंदिर को नुकसान पहुँचा, किंतु इसकी धार्मिक महत्ता बनी रही।
स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के बाद सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल ने मंदिर के पुनर्निर्माण का निर्णय लिया। वर्तमान मंदिर का निर्माण चालुक्य शैली में किया गया और 1951 में इसका उद्घाटन भारत के प्रथम राष्ट्रपति डॉ. राजेंद्र प्रसाद द्वारा किया गया।
सोमनाथ मंदिर अरब सागर के तट पर स्थित है। मंदिर परिसर में स्थित “बाण स्तंभ” विशेष रूप से प्रसिद्ध है। इस स्तंभ पर अंकित है कि इस बिंदु से दक्षिण ध्रुव तक बीच में कोई भूभाग नहीं है।
आज सोमनाथ मंदिर भारत के प्रमुख तीर्थ स्थलों में से एक है। यहाँ प्रतिवर्ष लाखों श्रद्धालु दर्शन के लिए आते हैं। यह मंदिर भारतीय सभ्यता, आस्था और पुनर्निर्माण की भावना का प्रतीक माना जाता है।

The Somnath Temple is one of the oldest and most sacred Shiva temples in India. It is located at Prabhas Patan on the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat. It is regarded as the first among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
The name Somnath means “Lord of the Moon.” According to Hindu mythology, the Moon God (Chandra) worshipped Lord Shiva here to free himself from a curse, leading to the establishment of this sacred shrine.
The history of Somnath Temple is extremely ancient. References to the temple are found in several Puranas and religious texts. The temple is considered a symbol of India’s cultural resilience because it was destroyed multiple times by invaders and rebuilt repeatedly.
The most famous attack took place in 1025 CE by Mahmud of Ghazni. Despite repeated destruction, the religious significance of the temple remained intact.
After India’s independence, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel initiated the reconstruction of the temple. The present structure was built in the Chalukyan style, and it was inaugurated in 1951 by India’s first President, Rajendra Prasad.
The temple stands on the shore of the Arabian Sea. A famous feature within the temple complex is the “Baan Stambh,” which indicates that there is no landmass between that point and the South Pole.
Today, Somnath Temple is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in India. Millions of devotees visit it every year. It stands as a symbol of faith, cultural continuity, and national heritage.
