A multi-institutional study of 830 adult patients across eight academic centres has revealed that nearly 1 in 10 adults diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) carry a mutation in the TP53 gene. This finding is significant for improving diagnosis, prognosis, and targeted treatment strategies.

🩸 What is Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL)?

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), also called acute lymphocytic leukaemia, is a type of blood cancer that affects white blood cells and bone marrow.

It is a rapidly progressing (fast-growing) cancer and is the most common cancer in children, although it can also affect adults.

⚠️ Symptoms

Common symptoms of ALL include:

  • Bleeding from gums
  • Bone pain
  • Fever
  • Frequent infections
  • Frequent or severe nosebleeds

🧬 Causes

ALL occurs when a bone marrow cell undergoes genetic mutations in its DNA, leading to uncontrolled growth of abnormal white blood cells.

One such mutation involves the TP53 gene, which normally helps regulate cell growth and prevent cancer.

🔬 Types of ALL

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ALL is classified into two main types:

1. B-cell Lymphoblastic Leukaemia

  • Originates in immature B-cell lymphocytes
  • Most common type

2. T-cell Lymphoblastic Leukaemia

  • Originates in immature T-cell lymphocytes
  • Less common

💊 Treatment

Treatment of ALL may include:

  • Chemotherapy (main treatment)
  • Targeted therapy (drugs that attack cancer-specific cells)

Early detection and genetic profiling (like TP53 mutation) help in better treatment planning.

🌱 Significance of Study

The discovery of TP53 mutations in a significant proportion of adult ALL patients:

  • Helps identify high-risk patients
  • Enables personalized treatment approaches
  • Improves survival outcomes through targeted therapies

🩸 ALL क्या है?

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL)

1. B-cell ALL

2. T-cell ALL
