Recently, the Institute of Indian Foundrymen (IIF) and CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) signed an agreement to develop and promote the use of waste foundry sand in road construction. This initiative aims to convert industrial waste into a valuable resource for infrastructure development.

🏭 What is Foundry Sand?
Foundry sand is a byproduct generated during the production of ferrous and non-ferrous metal castings. It is primarily composed of high-quality silica, making it suitable for reuse in construction activities.
The physical and chemical properties of foundry sand vary depending on the casting process and the industry from which it originates.
⚙️ Types of Foundry Sand
Foundry sands are classified based on the type of binder system used in metal casting.
One type is clay-bonded sand, also known as green sand. It is made from naturally occurring materials and typically contains 85–95% high-quality silica sand along with 4–10% bentonite clay, which acts as a binder.
The second type is chemically bonded sand. This type is used in core and mold making, where higher strength is required to withstand the high temperatures of molten metal.
⚠️ Environmental Challenge
Waste foundry sand poses environmental concerns due to its large-scale generation and disposal requirements. Improper disposal can lead to land and environmental degradation.

इसके भौतिक और रासायनिक गुण कास्टिंग प्रक्रिया और उद्योग के प्रकार पर निर्भर करते हैं।

फाउंड्री सैंड को बाइंडर सिस्टम के आधार पर वर्गीकृत किया जाता है।
पहला प्रकार क्ले-बॉन्डेड सैंड (ग्रीन सैंड) है, जो प्राकृतिक सामग्री से बना होता है। इसमें 85–95% सिलिका सैंड और 4–10% बेंटोनाइट क्ले होती है, जो बाइंडर का कार्य करती है।
दूसरा प्रकार केमिकल-बॉन्डेड सैंड है, जिसका उपयोग कोर और मोल्ड बनाने में किया जाता है, जहाँ उच्च तापमान को सहने के लिए अधिक मजबूती की आवश्यकता होती है।

वेस्ट फाउंड्री सैंड का बड़े पैमाने पर उत्पादन और निपटान पर्यावरण के लिए चुनौती बनता है। यदि इसका सही तरीके से प्रबंधन न किया जाए, तो यह पर्यावरण को नुकसान पहुंचा सकता है।
