The Government of Delhi launched the “Metro Monday” initiative on 19 May 2026 to encourage the use of public transportation and reduce fuel consumption. The initiative was launched by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation amid global economic uncertainty and tensions in West Asia.

The campaign has been introduced under the broader “Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan” initiative, which aims to strengthen economic resilience and promote responsible energy usage during periods of international instability.

As part of the initiative, the Delhi Government announced several administrative measures. Government employees will now be allowed to work from home (WFH) for two days every week to reduce daily commuting and fuel usage. Additionally, the government imposed a one-year freeze on official foreign visits to reduce public expenditure.

Citizens have also been encouraged to observe a weekly “No Vehicle Day” and use public transport systems such as the metro, buses, and other shared transportation services. The initiative is expected to help reduce traffic congestion, pollution, and fuel consumption in the national capital.

The Labour Department has been appointed as the nodal agency to monitor work-from-home advisories issued to private companies and institutions. This step aims to ensure broader participation from the private sector in reducing fuel consumption.

The Delhi Government also revised official working hours for different departments. Delhi Government offices will now operate from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM, while Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) offices will function from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The staggered timings are intended to reduce peak-hour traffic pressure and improve transportation efficiency.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was established on 3 May 1995 as a joint venture between the Government of India and the Delhi Government. The first operational metro corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari became operational in 2002. Today, the Delhi Metro is one of India’s largest and most important urban transport systems.

The National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi received special administrative status under the 69th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1991 and functions under Article 239AA of the Indian Constitution.

दिल्ली सरकार ने कार्यालय समय में भी बदलाव किया है। दिल्ली सरकार के कार्यालय अब सुबह 10:30 बजे से शाम 7:00 बजे तक खुलेंगे, जबकि Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) कार्यालय सुबह 8:30 बजे से शाम 5:00 बजे तक कार्य करेंगे। अलग-अलग समय निर्धारित करने का उद्देश्य ट्रैफिक दबाव को कम करना है।
