Recently, Gangotri National Park reopened after a six-month winter break.
The park is located in the state of Uttarakhand and lies along the upper catchment area of the Bhagirathi River.
The northeastern boundary of the park forms the international border between India and Tibet (China). The park also shares boundaries with Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and Govind National Park.
Geographically, the mountains within the park belong to the Gangotri Group of the Garhwal Himalayas, which is a subrange of the eastern Himalayas.
Some of the important peaks located in the park include Chaukhamba I, Satopanth, Chaukhamba II, Chaukhamba III, and Kedarnath Main.
One of the most significant features of the park is the Gangotri Glacier, which is one of the primary sources of the Ganga River.
In terms of flora, the lower elevations are dominated by Western Himalayan subalpine conifer forests consisting of fir, deodar, oak, spruce, and rhododendron trees. At higher altitudes, alpine shrubs are commonly found.
The park is rich in biodiversity and is home to several important animal species such as the snow leopard, brown bear, blue sheep, musk deer, Asian black bear, and Himalayan tahr.
