West Bengal has an unusually diverse physical geography. The state stretches from the Himalayan region in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south and includes mountains, foothills, alluvial plains, western uplands, deltaic tracts, mangrove areas and coastal plains. The Government of West Bengal's general facts page broadly identifies the Himalayan, Terai, Rarh, Western Plateau and Highlands, Ganga Delta/Sundarbans and coastal areas, while more detailed state documentation divides the state into nine physiographic units. West Bengal Government
1. Why West Bengal's Geography Is Important
West Bengal covers 88,752 sq km. Its physical setting is particularly important because the state extends from high Himalayan terrain to the Bay of Bengal. Sandakphu, at about 3,636 metres, is identified by the state government as its highest point. West Bengal Government
This geographical diversity influences:
- climate and rainfall;
- river systems;
- soil formation;
- agriculture;
- forests and wildlife;
- settlement patterns;
- transport;
- industries;
- floods and erosion; and
- the regional economy.
Therefore, physical geography should be treated as the foundation for later chapters on West Bengal's rivers, climate, soils, agriculture and environment.

West Bengal Government
2. Major Physiographic Divisions
For exam preparation, West Bengal can first be understood through the following major geographical belts:
Himalayan Region → Terai-Dooars and Sub-Himalayan Belt → North Bengal Plains/Barind → Rarh and Western Uplands → Gangetic Plains and Delta → Sundarbans → Coastal Plains
The detailed government framework identifies nine units: Himalayas, sub-Himalayan alluvial fans, Barind uplands, eastern fringes of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, plateau-fringe palaeo-deltas, upper Ganga delta, reclaimed/tidal lower Ganga delta, Sundarbans mangrove delta and Medinipur coastal plains. WB ADMIP
3. Himalayan Region
The Himalayan region forms the northern mountainous part of West Bengal and is principally associated with the Darjeeling–Kalimpong region.
It is characterised by steep slopes, deep valleys, considerable elevation differences and a complex drainage network.
Sandakphu is the highest point of West Bengal. West Bengal Government
Tea cultivation, tourism and forest resources are important to the regional economy. Darjeeling tea in particular has become internationally associated with the region.
Because of steep slopes and heavy monsoonal rainfall, landslides and slope instability are important geographical concerns.

West Bengal Government
4. Terai and Dooars Region
Immediately south of the Himalayan mountains lies the Terai-Dooars/sub-Himalayan foothill belt.
Rivers descending rapidly from the Himalayas carry large quantities of sediments and deposit them after entering gentler terrain. Consequently, river channels and sediment deposition have played an important role in shaping this landscape.
The Dooars are especially associated with:
- tea gardens;
- forests;
- wildlife;
- numerous rivers;
- high rainfall; and
- fertile foothill landscapes.
The state government's geographical overview specifically recognises the Terai as one of West Bengal's broad geographical regions. West Bengal Government

5. Barind Uplands
The Barind tract represents an older alluvial upland landscape in parts of North Bengal.
Unlike very recent floodplains, the Barind surface consists of comparatively older alluvial deposits and has distinctive soil and relief characteristics.
This distinction between older alluvium and newer alluvium is important because it helps explain differences in soil properties, drainage and agricultural conditions.
The detailed West Bengal physiographic classification recognises the Barind uplands as a separate unit. WB ADMIP

6. Western Plateau and Highlands
The western part of West Bengal gradually merges with the eastern fringe of the Chota Nagpur Plateau.
This landscape is particularly important in and around Purulia and Bankura, with adjoining western districts also showing transitional characteristics.
Compared with the fertile Gangetic plains, the western landscape generally contains more undulating terrain and older geological formations.
The detailed government classification explicitly recognises the degenerated eastern fringes of the Chota Nagpur Plateau as one of West Bengal's physiographic units. WB ADMIP

7. Rarh Region
The Rarh region is one of the most frequently encountered geographical terms in West Bengal examinations.
Broadly, it represents the transitional landscape between the western plateau/highlands and the younger alluvial plains farther east.
The state government's general geographical classification explicitly lists Rarh Region among West Bengal's broad geographical regions. West Bengal Government
Students should not treat the Rarh as synonymous with the entire western plateau. It is better understood as a distinct regional geographical concept with transitional characteristics.

8. Gangetic Plain and Upper Delta
A very large part of central and southern West Bengal forms part of the Ganga river system and its alluvial plains.
These areas have been built largely through long-term river deposition.
The flat terrain, alluvial soils and availability of water have contributed to:
- intensive agriculture;
- dense settlement;
- development of towns;
- transport networks; and
- economic concentration.
The detailed physiographic classification distinguishes the primarily non-tidal upper Ganga delta from the lower tidal delta. WB ADMIP

9. Lower Ganga Delta
Moving southwards, tidal influences become increasingly important.
The detailed state framework distinguishes between the reclaimed lower Ganga delta and the more strongly tidally inundated mangrove delta farther south. WB ADMIP
This distinction is important for understanding:
- embankments;
- drainage;
- salinity;
- agriculture;
- tidal flooding; and
- human settlement.
The lower delta therefore forms an important transition between the densely inhabited Gangetic plain and the mangrove-dominated Sundarbans.

10. Sundarbans
At the southern end of the Ganga delta lies the Sundarbans, one of West Bengal's most distinctive geographical regions.
It is a low-lying deltaic environment containing:
- tidal channels;
- creeks;
- islands;
- mudflats;
- saline and brackish conditions; and
- mangrove forests.
The West Bengal government identifies the Ganga Delta in the south as containing the Sundarban Mangrove Forest. West Bengal Government
The Sundarbans are therefore important not merely as a forest topic but also for geography, environment, biodiversity, disasters and climate-related questions.

11. Medinipur Coastal Plain
West Bengal also possesses a coastal plain adjoining the Bay of Bengal.
The detailed state physiographic framework separately identifies the Medinipur coastal plains, noting an important contribution from the Subarnarekha river system. WB ADMIP
This region should be distinguished from the Sundarbans. Both are in southern West Bengal, but they have different geomorphological characteristics.

12. Rivers and Relief Are Closely Connected
West Bengal's relief cannot be studied separately from its rivers.
The state's Irrigation and Waterways Department identifies Ganga, Brahmaputra and Subarnarekha as its three major river-basin systems and records 39 river basins overall. IWD wb
In the north, Himalayan rivers interact with steep slopes and foothill deposits. Across the plains, rivers build and reshape alluvial landscapes. In the south, distributaries, tides and sedimentation help create the delta.
This is why our separate Rivers and Drainage chapter will come immediately after the physical-geography foundation.
13. Exam-Oriented Comparison
| Region | Key Characteristic | Remember |
|---|---|---|
| Himalayan Region | Mountains and valleys | Sandakphu |
| Terai-Dooars | Himalayan foothills | Tea, forests, rivers |
| Barind | Older alluvial upland | Old alluvium |
| Western Plateau | Plateau fringe/highlands | Purulia–Bankura belt |
| Rarh | Transitional region | Western Bengal geography |
| Gangetic Plain | Alluvial plain | Agriculture & dense settlement |
| Lower Delta | Tidal/reclaimed delta | Embankments & salinity |
| Sundarbans | Mangrove delta | Tides & mangroves |
| Medinipur Coast | Coastal plain | Bay of Bengal/Subarnarekha influence |
14. Common Exam Traps
Sandakphu vs Tiger Hill: Sandakphu is West Bengal's highest point; Tiger Hill is famous but is not the state's highest point. West Bengal Government
Rarh vs Western Plateau: They should not automatically be treated as identical.
Terai vs Dooars: Both belong to the broader northern foothill geography, but questions may test their regional distinctions.
Sundarbans vs entire Ganga Delta: The Sundarbans form the mangrove-dominated southern delta; the Ganga delta is geographically broader.
Sundarbans vs Medinipur Coast: Both occur in southern West Bengal, but they are distinct physiographic environments.
15. What to Memorise
For objective examinations, remember this geographical sequence:
Himalayas → Terai/Dooars → Plains/Barind → Rarh & Western Uplands → Gangetic Plain/Delta → Sundarbans & Coastal Plain
Also remember:
Highest point: Sandakphu — about 3,636 m. West Bengal Government
State area: 88,752 sq km. West Bengal Government
