Indian Billiards Legend Manoj Kothari Passes Away
Manoj Kothari, a towering figure in the world of cue sports, breathed his last at a hospital in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, following a massive cardiac arrest. He had undergone a liver transplant ten days prior, and while the surgery was initially successful, he later succumbed to complications from a lung infection. Kothari was a two-time World Billiards Champion, winning the IBSF World Billiards Championship in 1990 and the World Doubles Billiards Championship in 1997.
Beyond his playing career, Kothari was a transformative figure as a mentor. Since 2011, he served as the Chief National Coach of the Indian billiards team, guiding generations of players to international success. His legacy is carried forward by his son, Sourav Kothari, who is also a world champion; together, they formed the only father-son world champion duo in the history of the sport. His contributions were recognized with the Major Dhyan Chand Award for lifetime achievement in 2005 and the IBSF Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.
