Indian Navy Inaugurates Naval Sailing Node in Bhopal

The Indian Navy officially inaugurated a premier Naval Sailing Node at Upper Lake, popularly known as Bhojtal, in Bhopal on 17 May 2026.

The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Dinesh K Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff.

Purpose of the Naval Sailing Node

The facility has been developed as a modern water sports and training centre aimed at strengthening India’s naval sporting capabilities and promoting water-based training activities.

The Naval Sailing Node will primarily be used for training:

Indian Navy Sailing Team
Navy Rowing Team
Canoeing and Kayaking Teams
National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets

Notably, 17 out of the 34 members of the Indian Navy Sailing Team belong to Madhya Pradesh.

Event Highlights

During the inauguration ceremony, more than 30 naval personnel from the Indian Navy Watermanship Training Centre (INWTC), Visakhapatnam, showcased:

Sail parade demonstrations
Rowing displays
Kayaking performances
Canoeing activities

These displays highlighted the Navy’s expertise in watermanship and adventure sports.

Strategic Importance

The initiative supports India’s National Sports Policy by developing world-class talent in water sports for future participation in international competitions such as:

The project also aims to inspire local youth to join the Defence Forces and participate in adventure and sporting activities.

About Bhojtal (Upper Lake)

Upper Lake, also known as Bhojtal, was constructed in the 11th century by the Paramara ruler Raja Bhoj.

The lake became part of the Bhoj Wetland, which was designated as a Ramsar Site (Wetland of International Importance) in 2002.

Additional Information

The Indian Navy was officially established in its modern form on 26 January 1950 and is headquartered in New Delhi.
