Recently, authorities rescued 16 Indian Softshell Turtle during a routine check in Greater Noida, highlighting concerns over illegal wildlife trade.

The Indian Softshell Turtle, also known as the Ganges Softshell Turtle, is one of the largest freshwater turtle species in the world.

In terms of appearance, it has a round to oval-shaped carapace (upper shell), which is typically green with a yellow border. It possesses a long neck and a tube-like snout that helps it breathe while staying submerged in water.

Its flattened and flexible shell allows it to move swiftly, making it an excellent swimmer.

These turtles primarily inhabit deep rivers, lakes, canals, and ponds, especially areas with sandy or muddy bottoms where they can bury themselves.

They are widely distributed across South Asia, including India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, and are mainly found in major river systems such as the Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Yamuna, Narmada, and Mahanadi.

Indian Softshell Turtles are omnivorous, feeding on fish, amphibians, insects, mollusks, carrion, and aquatic plants.

Their breeding season generally occurs between February and April.

Culturally, these turtles are considered sacred in certain regions, especially in temple ponds of Odisha.

However, they face serious threats such as habitat destruction, poaching, illegal trade (especially for traditional medicine), agricultural expansion, and commercial exploitation.

Due to these threats, the species is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which provides the highest level of legal protection in India.

Indian Softshell Turtle,
