Innovation & Incubation Centre Inaugurated at NID Ahmedabad
On 17 May 2026, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Innovation & Incubation Centre at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The initiative aims to strengthen innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry-oriented design education in India.
The newly inaugurated centre represents a major strategic expansion of the NID ecosystem into advanced technology sectors. The institution plans to widen its curriculum and incubation activities into areas such as semiconductor design, microchip technology, and industrial park planning. This move reflects the growing importance of design and innovation in India’s technology and manufacturing sectors.
A dedicated commercialization vertical will also be established across all NID campuses. Its objective is to bridge the gap between creative design concepts and industrial applications. Through this system, innovative ideas developed by students and designers can be transformed into commercially viable products and technologies.
The event also highlighted the importance of integrating traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern scientific and technological approaches. Special attention was given to Gujarat’s famous Patan Patola textiles, which are known for their precision weaving, intricate detailing, and scientifically balanced color blending techniques.
Additional Information
The National Institute of Design was established in 1961 as an autonomous multidisciplinary institution. It functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. NID was declared an “Institution of National Importance” under the National Institute of Design Act, 2014.
Patan Patola is a traditional double ikat silk textile woven mainly by the Salvi community in Patan, Gujarat. It received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2013 for its unique cultural and artistic identity.
