Intra-BRICS Merchandise Trade Reaches USD 1.17 Trillion
India’s Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal announced on 16 May 2026 that intra-BRICS merchandise trade has reached USD 1.17 trillion. The statement was made during the second meeting of the BRICS Contact Group on Trade and Economic Issues (CGETI) held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
The meeting was organized under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” highlighting the growing importance of economic cooperation among BRICS nations.
Major Trade Growth
Trade among BRICS countries has expanded significantly over the past two decades. Intra-BRICS merchandise trade increased nearly thirteen times, rising from USD 84 billion in 2003 to USD 1.17 trillion in 2024.
At present, BRICS trade contributes nearly 5% of total global trade, reflecting the increasing influence of emerging economies in the international economic system.
