English: The islands of India

India has two major offshore island groups. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal, while Lakshadweep lies in the Arabian Sea near the Malabar coast. Locating these groups on a map is the first step toward understanding their origin, environment and importance. They are distinct union territories, not two names for the same island chain. For SSC, Railway and UPSC preparation, connect every fact with its location instead of memorising a disconnected list.

Andaman and Nicobar: location and landforms

The Andaman group is to the north and the Nicobar group to the south. The islands form a long chain in the Bay of Bengal. Many are associated with elevated submarine mountain ridges; their physical character differs from the low coral islands of Lakshadweep. Barren Island, in the Andaman group, is the site of India's only active volcano. This is a useful contrast: the presence of a volcano in this eastern group does not make all Indian islands volcanic. Forests, mangroves, beaches and coral reefs occur in different parts of the island territory, so a single landscape description cannot cover every island.

The Ten Degree Channel separates the Andaman and Nicobar groups. On a map, first find mainland India's eastern coastline, then move southeast across the Bay of Bengal to locate the archipelago. This position helps explain why the islands matter for maritime routes and monitoring the surrounding sea. For an exam answer, distinguish the geographical importance of their position from an unsupported claim that every island has the same settlement pattern or the same facilities.

Lakshadweep: coral islands and lagoons

Lakshadweep lies off the southwest coast of India in the Arabian Sea. Its islands are associated with coral formations. A coral reef develops through the long-term accumulation of calcium carbonate structures built by coral organisms under suitable marine conditions. An atoll is a ring-like reef or island arrangement around a lagoon; a lagoon is a relatively sheltered body of seawater. These terms help explain the low elevation and delicate coastal environment of many Lakshadweep islands. They also explain why careless construction, pollution and damage to reefs can have serious local consequences.

Minicoy is an important island in this Arabian Sea group. When revising, remember the location first: Lakshadweep belongs with the Arabian Sea, not the Bay of Bengal. Avoid treating a changing administrative count of islands or inhabited islands as a permanent geography fact without checking the current official record. The stable concept tested most often is the distinction between a western coral island group and the eastern Andaman and Nicobar chain.

Why these islands matter

Island ecosystems support marine biodiversity and coastal livelihoods. Coral reefs can provide habitat for many species and help reduce wave energy, while mangroves offer habitat and coastal protection in places where they occur. Their benefits are real, but they should not be used to suggest that every shoreline is automatically protected from a cyclone or tsunami. Fishing, tourism and transport must be balanced with freshwater limits, waste management and the needs of local communities. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami is a reminder that island communities face serious coastal hazards.

Study method and practice

Draw a simple outline map. Mark the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Lakshadweep, Andaman, Nicobar and Barren Island. Then answer these checks: Which group lies near the Malabar coast? Lakshadweep. Where is India's active volcano? Barren Island in the Andaman group. Which two groups does the Ten Degree Channel separate? Andaman and Nicobar. What is a lagoon? A sheltered body of seawater, commonly associated here with coral atolls. Finally explain, in two sentences, why the two island groups should not be described as having the same origin. This last question tests understanding rather than recall.
