Recently, Bangladesh launched an emergency vaccination campaign targeting more than a million children amid a fast-spreading outbreak of Measles.
Measles is a highly contagious and serious airborne disease caused by a virus belonging to the paramyxovirus family.
The disease spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through inhalation of contaminated air. The virus can remain active and infectious in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours.
After entering the body, the virus infects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body, leading to severe illness and complications.
The symptoms of measles usually begin with a high fever appearing 10 to 14 days after exposure. This is followed by symptoms such as runny nose, cough, red and watery eyes, and small white spots inside the cheeks (Koplik spots).
A characteristic skin rash appears after a few days, usually starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body.
Measles poses a higher risk to unvaccinated individuals, especially young children and pregnant women, who are more likely to develop severe complications.
There is no specific antiviral treatment for measles. However, it can be effectively prevented through vaccination.
The Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine provides long-term immunity and is a key tool in controlling outbreaks and achieving public health goals.
