Recently, reports of Newcastle disease spreading across Europe have raised concerns, and poultry producers across the UK are being urged to increase vigilance as the virus continues its westward spread.
Newcastle disease is caused by avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 and affects chickens as well as a wide range of other bird species.
It is a highly contagious and often severe disease found worldwide, especially impacting domestic poultry and the poultry industry.
The disease appears in three forms based on severity. The lentogenic form is mild and widespread, causing minimal outbreaks. The mesogenic form is moderate in severity, while the velogenic form is highly virulent and can cause severe outbreaks and high mortality.
Transmission occurs when infected birds shed the virus through exhaled air, respiratory secretions, and feces. The virus can survive in manure for up to two months and in dead carcasses for up to twelve months. However, it is easily destroyed by disinfectants, fumigants, and direct sunlight.
The symptoms of Newcastle disease are varied. It commonly presents as a respiratory illness, with signs such as gasping, coughing, sneezing, and abnormal breathing sounds.
In severe cases, nervous symptoms may appear, including tremors, paralysis of wings and legs, twisted necks, circling, spasms, and complete paralysis.
Other symptoms include depression, diarrhea, and a partial or complete drop in egg production. The eggs produced may be abnormal in color, shape, or surface and may contain watery albumen.
There is no specific treatment available for Newcastle disease. However, antibiotics may be used to control secondary bacterial infections.

Newcastle disease
