Nuclear Reactor |
A nuclear reactor is a system designed to initiate, maintain and control a nuclear fission chain reaction.
Chicago Pile-1, led by Enrico Fermi and his team at the University of Chicago, achieved the first human-made self-sustaining controlled nuclear chain reaction on 2 December 1942.
Fuel |
Fissile isotopes such as uranium-235 are used as fuel in many reactor designs. Other reactor systems may use different fissile or fertile materials.
Moderator |
A moderator slows fast neutrons to energies more suitable for sustaining fission in thermal reactors. Light water, heavy water and graphite are common moderator materials in different reactor designs.
Control Rods |
Control rods contain neutron-absorbing materials such as cadmium, boron or hafnium and regulate the rate of the chain reaction.
Coolant |
Coolants remove heat from the reactor core. Depending on reactor design, water, heavy water, gases, liquid metals or other coolants may be used.
