Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with Sweden’s prestigious “Royal Order of the Polar Star” during his official visit to Sweden on 18 May 2026. This award is regarded as the highest distinction that Sweden can confer upon a Head of Government.

The honour was presented in recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s contribution towards strengthening India–Sweden relations and enhancing cooperation between the two nations in areas such as trade, innovation, technology, sustainability, and diplomacy.

This recognition became the 31st international honour received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from foreign nations and international institutions. Over the years, PM Modi has received several prestigious global awards for strengthening diplomatic ties and promoting international cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi visited Sweden for a two-day official visit. Upon his arrival at Gothenburg Airport, he was welcomed by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. The visit focused on improving bilateral cooperation and strategic partnerships between India and Sweden.

The Royal Order of the Polar Star was instituted in 1748 by Sweden. Traditionally, the award recognizes exceptional personal contributions and services connected to Swedish interests, public duties, diplomacy, and international relations.

Sweden is a Scandinavian nation located in Northern Europe. Its current Prime Minister is Ulf Kristersson.
