Recently, India’s manufacturing activity slowed to a 45-month low in March, as the HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) declined to 53.9 from 56.9 in February.

The Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) is a key economic indicator that reflects business activity in both the manufacturing and services sectors.

It is a survey-based index that captures the perceptions of purchasing managers regarding changes in key business variables compared to the previous month.

PMI is calculated separately for the manufacturing and services sectors, and a composite PMI is also derived by combining both sectors.

The index helps in determining whether economic activity is expanding, contracting, or remaining stable. A PMI value above 50 indicates expansion, while a value below 50 indicates contraction.

There are two main types of PMI — Manufacturing PMI and Services PMI.

The Manufacturing PMI is derived by conducting monthly surveys of companies in the manufacturing sector. These surveys include fact-based questions related to five key variables: new orders, output, employment, suppliers’ delivery times, and stock of purchases.

The responses are aggregated to produce a single index value ranging between 0 and 100.

Thus, PMI serves as a leading indicator of economic health and is widely used by policymakers, economists, and investors to assess business conditions.

Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI)

Manufacturing PMI
