1. Introduction
Rivers are among the most important elements of West Bengal's physical geography. The state's unusual geographical shape—from the Himalayan region in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south—has produced a highly varied drainage system.
The rivers of West Bengal do not all have the same origin, flow pattern or characteristics. Some descend from the Himalayan region and carry enormous quantities of water and sediment. Some originate in the Chota Nagpur Plateau and flow eastward across the western districts. Others are distributaries and channels associated with the Ganga-Padma-Bhagirathi-Hooghly system.
This river network has played a fundamental role in the development of agriculture, settlements, trade, transport, industries and cities. At the same time, rivers are associated with floods, bank erosion, drainage congestion, siltation and changing channels.
For competitive examinations, West Bengal's rivers should therefore be studied as an interconnected drainage system, not merely as a list of river names.
2. Three Major Drainage Basins
At the broadest level, West Bengal is drained by three major river basins:
Ganga Basin
Brahmaputra Basin
Subarnarekha Basin
The Ganga basin covers the overwhelming majority of the state. The Brahmaputra basin is particularly important in northern West Bengal, while the Subarnarekha drains part of southwestern West Bengal.
This three-basin classification is extremely important for WBPSC, West Bengal Police, Clerkship and other state examinations.
PART A — RIVERS OF NORTH BENGAL
3. General Character of North Bengal Rivers
The drainage pattern of North Bengal is strongly influenced by the Himalayas and the sub-Himalayan foothills.
Important rivers include:
Teesta
Torsa
Jaldhaka
Raidak
Sankosh
Mahananda
Atreyee
Punarbhaba
Tangon
Kulik
Several North Bengal rivers are transboundary rivers. Their catchments may extend through Tibet, Sikkim, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh or neighbouring Indian states.
Himalayan rivers generally descend rapidly from high elevations. When they enter the plains, their gradient decreases and they deposit large quantities of sediment. Consequently, channel shifting, bank erosion, sedimentation and flooding are major geographical processes in North Bengal.
4. Teesta River
The Teesta is one of the most important rivers of North Bengal.
It originates in the high Himalayan region of Sikkim and flows through Sikkim before entering West Bengal. It passes through the northern part of the state and eventually enters Bangladesh, where it becomes part of the Brahmaputra drainage system.
Why is the Teesta important?
The Teesta is important because of:
irrigation,
hydrological significance,
flood management,
sediment transport,
agriculture,
regional water resources,
international/transboundary river geography.
The Teesta Barrage Project is one of the major irrigation projects associated with North Bengal.
Exam Trap
Do not classify the Teesta as a tributary of the Hooghly.
In terms of the present drainage system, the Teesta belongs to the Brahmaputra basin.
5. Torsa River
The Torsa is another major river of North Bengal.
Its upper catchment is associated with the Himalayan region, including Bhutan. It enters the plains of North Bengal and flows through the northern districts before continuing towards Bangladesh.
The Torsa is especially important in the geography of the Dooars and Cooch Behar region.
Like several other Himalayan rivers, it is characterised by:
heavy monsoon discharge,
sediment transport,
flood potential,
bank erosion,
shifting channels.
6. Jaldhaka River
The Jaldhaka is an important river of the sub-Himalayan and Dooars region.
Its drainage system is connected with the eastern Himalayan landscape. After passing through the northern plains, its waters ultimately form part of the larger Brahmaputra drainage network.
The Jaldhaka is important for understanding the river geography of the Dooars.
7. Raidak River
The Raidak river system is another important component of North Bengal drainage.
It is associated with the Bhutan Himalaya and flows through the northern part of West Bengal before ultimately joining the Brahmaputra drainage system.
For examination purposes, remember the cluster:
Teesta – Torsa – Jaldhaka – Raidak – Sankosh
These are major rivers associated with the Brahmaputra drainage of North Bengal.
8. Sankosh River
The Sankosh is an important river of the eastern part of North Bengal and the adjoining region.
It is also part of the Brahmaputra river system.
Questions may test whether students can distinguish these northern Brahmaputra-basin rivers from rivers belonging to the Ganga system.
PART B — MAHANANDA AND THE NORTHERN GANGA SYSTEM
9. Mahananda River
The Mahananda is particularly important because it belongs to the Ganga system, unlike the Teesta-Torsa-Jaldhaka-Raidak-Sankosh group.
It flows through the North Bengal region and is closely associated with areas including Siliguri and Malda.
The Mahananda system receives water from a broad catchment extending beyond West Bengal.
Exam Trap
Teesta → Brahmaputra system
but
Mahananda → Ganga system
This distinction is highly suitable for objective examination questions.
10. Rivers of the Dinajpur Region
Important rivers associated with Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur include:
Kulik
Tangon
Punarbhaba
Atreyee
The drainage of this region is particularly interesting because rivers frequently cross the international boundary between India and Bangladesh.
This illustrates an important feature of West Bengal's geography: a river may enter India from Bangladesh or leave India and later contribute to a larger river system outside the state.
Therefore, international boundaries do not determine natural drainage boundaries.
PART C — THE GANGA IN WEST BENGAL
11. Ganga and the Farakka Region
The Ganga enters the West Bengal region after flowing across the vast northern Indian plain.
The river is especially important in Malda and Murshidabad.
The Farakka region is one of the most important locations in the river geography of West Bengal.
Around the Farakka-Murshidabad sector, the Ganga-Padma-Bhagirathi system becomes extremely important for understanding the subsequent drainage of the state.
The main Ganga flow continues towards Bangladesh as the Padma, while the Bhagirathi-Hooghly system forms the major river artery through southern West Bengal.
12. Bhagirathi-Hooghly River System
The Bhagirathi-Hooghly is one of the most economically and historically important river systems of West Bengal.
In its upper part the channel is generally known as the Bhagirathi, while farther downstream it is known as the Hooghly.
The river flows southward across the Gangetic plain and eventually reaches the Bay of Bengal.
Importance
The Bhagirathi-Hooghly system is important for:
Kolkata and the surrounding urban region,
navigation,
ports,
industrial development,
settlement,
agriculture,
drainage,
historical trade.
Many historically important towns developed along or close to this river system.
13. Why the Hooghly Became Historically Important
The Hooghly provided an important navigable route linking inland Bengal with the sea.
European trading settlements and colonial commercial centres developed along this river corridor.
The rise of Kolkata as a major port and urban centre was closely connected with its location on the Hooghly.
Thus, the river is not only a physical geographical feature; it is also deeply connected with the economic and political history of Bengal.
PART D — RIVERS WEST OF THE BHAGIRATHI-HOOGHLY
14. Plateau-Origin Rivers
Several important rivers of western and south-western West Bengal originate in or are associated with the Chota Nagpur Plateau and adjoining uplands.
Important examples include:
Damodar
Ajay
Mayurakshi
Dwarakeswar
Shilabati
Kangsabati
Subarnarekha
These rivers differ from the major Himalayan rivers.
They generally receive a large proportion of their water from monsoon rainfall and flow from the western uplands towards the lower plains.
15. Damodar River
The Damodar is one of the best-known rivers of eastern India.
It originates in the Chota Nagpur Plateau region of Jharkhand and flows eastward into West Bengal.
Historically, the Damodar was notorious for destructive floods in the Bengal plains, which led to its famous association with the expression:
“Sorrow of Bengal.”
However, modern dams, barrages and flood-management systems have significantly modified the river's hydrological regime.
The Damodar system is extremely important for:
irrigation,
flood management,
industry,
water supply,
the industrial belt of West Bengal.
16. Damodar Valley and DVC
The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) was created to develop the Damodar Valley through multipurpose river management.
Its objectives have included:
flood moderation,
irrigation,
power generation,
water management,
regional development.
The Damodar Valley became one of India's important examples of integrated river-valley development after Independence.
Exam Fact
Damodar → Chota Nagpur Plateau → West Bengal → lower river network connected with the Rupnarayan-Hooghly system
17. Ajay River
The Ajay is another important west-to-east flowing river.
It originates in the plateau region and flows through areas associated with Jharkhand and West Bengal.
It eventually joins the Bhagirathi.
The Ajay basin is important in the geography of Birbhum and the Bardhaman region.
Like many plateau-origin rivers, its discharge varies considerably between the monsoon and dry seasons.
18. Mayurakshi River
The Mayurakshi is an important river associated with Jharkhand and West Bengal.
It flows through the Birbhum region and forms part of the drainage system that eventually connects with the Bhagirathi.
An important multipurpose irrigation system has developed around the Mayurakshi.
Massanjore Dam
The Massanjore Dam is constructed across the Mayurakshi.
It is an important name for competitive examinations.
The Mayurakshi system has played an important role in irrigation and flood management in parts of Birbhum, Murshidabad and adjoining areas.
19. Dwarakeswar River
The Dwarakeswar is an important river of western West Bengal.
It flows through the western upland and adjoining plains.
A particularly important geographical relationship is:
Dwarakeswar + Shilabati → Rupnarayan
This is a useful river-confluence fact for competitive examinations.
20. Shilabati River
The Shilabati, also commonly written Silabati, is an important river of southwestern West Bengal.
It flows through parts of the western districts and ultimately joins the Dwarakeswar system.
Their combined flow forms the Rupnarayan River.
21. Rupnarayan River
The Rupnarayan is an important river of southern West Bengal.
It is formed from the combined river system associated with the Dwarakeswar and Shilabati.
It ultimately joins the Hooghly.
Remember
Dwarakeswar + Shilabati → Rupnarayan → Hooghly
This sequence is highly important for map-based and matching questions.
22. Kangsabati River
The Kangsabati, also historically called the Kasai/Cossye in some contexts, is an important river of southwestern West Bengal.
It is closely associated with:
Purulia,
Bankura,
Jhargram,
Paschim Medinipur,
the irrigation geography of southwestern Bengal.
23. Kangsabati Reservoir Project
One of the most important projects on the Kangsabati system is the Kangsabati Reservoir Project.
The dam is situated at Mukutmanipur in Bankura district, near the confluence of the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers.
The project was initiated in 1956–57.
Its major functions include:
irrigation,
water storage,
drinking-water support,
flood moderation.
The project has had major significance for the drought-prone western and southwestern parts of West Bengal.
24. Haldi River
The Haldi is an important river of the lower southwestern drainage system.
It ultimately joins the Hooghly near the Haldia region.
This gives the river considerable geographical significance because Haldia developed into a major port-industrial centre.
25. Subarnarekha River
The Subarnarekha represents one of West Bengal's three broad drainage basins.
It originates in the Chota Nagpur Plateau region and flows through Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha before entering the Bay of Bengal.
Only part of southwestern West Bengal lies within its basin.
Exam Trap
The Subarnarekha is not simply a tributary of the Hooghly.
It has its own basin and flows independently towards the Bay of Bengal.
PART E — RIVERS EAST OF THE BHAGIRATHI
26. Jalangi River
The Jalangi is an important river of the eastern Gangetic plain.
It is closely associated with the river geography of Murshidabad and Nadia.
It eventually joins the Bhagirathi.
The Jalangi is important for understanding the complex network of distributaries and former distributary channels in the Bengal delta.
27. Bhairab River
The Bhairab is another important river/channel associated with the Ganga-Padma distributary system.
Together with rivers such as the Jalangi, it forms part of the drainage network of eastern Murshidabad and adjoining areas.
28. Mathabhanga River
The Mathabhanga is connected with the Ganga-Padma system.
Its importance increases because of its relationship with two other important rivers:
Churni
Ichamati
The Mathabhanga system enters West Bengal in the Nadia region and subsequently divides.
29. Churni River
The Churni is associated with the Mathabhanga river system.
It flows through Nadia and ultimately joins the Bhagirathi.
Important Relationship
Mathabhanga → Churni → Bhagirathi
This is a useful sequence for objective questions.
30. Ichamati River
The Ichamati is one of the most interesting rivers of southern Bengal because part of its course is associated with the India-Bangladesh international boundary.
The river system ultimately drains southward towards the tidal waterways connected with the Bay of Bengal.
The Ichamati is therefore important in:
political geography,
drainage geography,
border geography,
deltaic geography.
PART F — THE SUNDARBANS RIVER NETWORK
31. Rivers and Creeks of the Sundarbans
The Sundarbans cannot be understood through one river alone.
It contains a complicated network of:
tidal rivers,
distributaries,
creeks,
channels,
estuaries.
Important names include:
Matla
Raimangal
Muriganga
Saptamukhi
Thakuran
Bidyadhari
Gosaba and other tidal channels.
The precise character of these channels is strongly controlled by tides.
32. Matla River
The Matla is one of the best-known tidal rivers of the Sundarbans region.
It is strongly influenced by tides from the Bay of Bengal.
Unlike an ordinary upstream freshwater river, the lower deltaic rivers experience complex interactions among:
river water,
tidal seawater,
salinity,
sediment,
erosion,
deposition.
33. Raimangal River
The Raimangal is an important river of the eastern Sundarbans.
Its location near the international boundary makes it particularly important geographically.
It is part of the tidal drainage system through which water ultimately reaches the Bay of Bengal.
34. Muriganga
The Muriganga is another important channel of the lower delta.
It is especially significant in the geography of the Sagar Island/Gangasagar region.
The lower delta consists of numerous islands separated by tidal channels, making waterways central to transport and everyday life.
PART G — FLOODS, EROSION AND DRAINAGE
35. Why West Bengal Is Highly Flood-Prone
Flooding is not uniform throughout the state.
Different regions experience floods for different reasons.
North Bengal
Major causes include:
intense monsoon rainfall,
rapid runoff from Himalayan catchments,
heavy sediment loads,
unstable channels,
upstream discharge,
restricted drainage.
Gangetic Plain
Floods may result from:
heavy rainfall,
high river stages,
overflow,
embankment failure,
drainage congestion,
interaction between tributaries and major rivers.
South Bengal and Delta
Important factors include:
heavy rainfall,
limited drainage capacity,
tidal effects,
river siltation,
storm surges,
cyclones,
low elevation.
Floods are therefore part of the natural geomorphological functioning of the Bengal delta, although settlement and infrastructure greatly increase their social and economic impact.
36. Riverbank Erosion
Riverbank erosion is another major geographical issue.
The problem can be particularly serious along large alluvial rivers because river channels naturally migrate.
The Ganga-Padma system around parts of Malda and Murshidabad has historically experienced major bank erosion and channel changes.
River erosion can cause:
loss of agricultural land,
destruction of houses,
displacement,
damage to roads,
loss of infrastructure,
alteration of settlement patterns.
37. Why Rivers Change Their Courses
Alluvial rivers carry large quantities of sediment.
When the velocity of water changes, sediments may be deposited. At other locations, riverbanks may be eroded.
Over time, this combination of:
erosion + transport + deposition
can shift the position of a river channel.
This is especially important in the young and dynamic alluvial landscapes of Bengal.
PART H — BARRAGES, DAMS AND WATER MANAGEMENT
38. Farakka Barrage
The Farakka Barrage is one of the most important hydraulic structures associated with the Ganga in West Bengal.
For examinations, students should connect Farakka with:
Ganga,
Murshidabad region,
Bhagirathi-Hooghly system,
water management,
navigation and river-flow management.
It is a major geographical landmark in the state's river system.
39. Teesta Barrage Project
The Teesta Barrage Project is one of the major irrigation projects of West Bengal and eastern India.
It is designed around the utilisation of Teesta waters for purposes including:
irrigation,
hydropower potential,
flood moderation,
water-resource management.
The project is particularly important for the agricultural geography of North Bengal.
40. Kangsabati Project
Remember the association:
Kangsabati + Kumari → Mukutmanipur → Kangsabati Reservoir Project
This project is especially important for southwestern West Bengal.
41. Massanjore Dam
Remember:
Massanjore Dam → Mayurakshi River
This is one of the most common river-project matching facts that students should know.
42. Durgapur Barrage
The Durgapur Barrage is associated with the Damodar river system.
It forms an important component of irrigation and water management in the Damodar Valley.
Do not confuse:
Durgapur Barrage → Damodar
Massanjore → Mayurakshi
Mukutmanipur → Kangsabati-Kumari
Teesta Barrage → Teesta
