Recently, a rare Indian giant flying squirrel, native to the Western Ghats, was sighted in Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, marking a significant biodiversity observation.

Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve is located in the state of Chhattisgarh. It was formed by combining the Udanti and Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuaries.

The reserve is ecologically important due to its connectivity with nearby forest divisions such as Kanker and North Kondagaon, forming a continuous corridor with the Indravati Tiger Reserve in the Bastar region.

The drainage system of the reserve is dominated by the Mahanadi River, along with its tributaries — Udanti, Sitanadi, Indravan, and Pairi Rivers.

The terrain includes several mountainous features, with Deo Dongri being the highest peak and Atanga Dongar as a prominent mountain.

The vegetation is mainly tropical dry and moist deciduous forest, which supports rich biodiversity.

Flora is dominated by Sal (Shorea robusta), along with other species like teak, bamboo, tendu, mahua, bija, and harra.

The reserve is known for conserving the last few herds of the endangered wild buffalo.

It also supports diverse fauna including tigers, Indian wolves, leopards, sloth bears, and mouse deer.

The sighting of the Indian giant flying squirrel outside its usual Western Ghats habitat indicates ecological connectivity and highlights the importance of wildlife corridors in conservation.
