The United Nations and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) observed the International Day for Women in Maritime on 18 May 2026 to recognize and promote the contribution of women in the global maritime and shipping industry.

To mark the occasion, the IMO organized a special commemorative event themed “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence.” The event highlighted the importance of increasing women’s participation in maritime professions and strengthening gender equality within the shipping sector.

The official ceremony was held at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization in London. Representatives from different countries, maritime institutions, and international organizations participated in the event.

During the programme, the prestigious IMO Gender Equality Award 2026 was presented to Professor Momoko Kitada. She was officially nominated by Japan for her contribution towards promoting women’s participation, leadership, and equality in the maritime sector.

The International Day for Women in Maritime is observed every year to encourage sustained recruitment, employment, and leadership opportunities for women in the maritime industry. Women continue to remain underrepresented in many maritime professions, including shipping operations, marine engineering, port management, and seafaring services.

The initiative also supports the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), which focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering women globally.
