The Gayatri Mantra occurs in the Rigveda, specifically in Mandala 3, hymn 62, verse 10.
It is traditionally attributed to the sage Vishvamitra and is dedicated to Savitr, a solar deity associated with the stimulating and life-giving power of the Sun.
The mantra later acquired enormous importance in Hindu religious and philosophical traditions.
The term Gayatri technically refers to the poetic metre in which the mantra is composed.
The Rigveda contains several different metres, including Gayatri, Trishtubh and Jagati.
This question is frequently asked because students sometimes confuse the Gayatri Mantra with the Samaveda due to the latter's strong association with chanting and music.
Although many Rigvedic verses were adapted for melodic recitation in the Samaveda, the original textual source of the Gayatri Mantra is the Rigveda.
