76. Which priest performed the physical details of the sacrifice and was associated with the Yajurveda?
Correct Answer
A. Adhvaryu
Explanation
The Adhvaryu was the Vedic priest responsible for the practical and physical performance of the sacrifice and was closely associated with the Yajurveda.
His tasks included preparing the sacrificial ground, measuring and constructing ritual spaces, arranging vessels and offerings, tending to ritual implements and performing prescribed actions while uttering Yajurvedic formulae.
This role differed from that of the Hotri, who recited Rigvedic hymns, and the Udgatri, who sang Samavedic chants.
The Brahman priest acted as an overall supervisor of the ritual.
The division of functions among these priests reflects the increasing sophistication of Vedic sacrificial religion.
In major sacrifices, ritual precision was considered essential, and errors in action or pronunciation could be regarded as affecting the efficacy of the ceremony.
The Yajurveda itself is therefore strongly practical in character, containing formulae and procedural material connected with sacrifice.
Its two major traditions are the Shukla or White Yajurveda and the Krishna or Black Yajurveda.
During the Later Vedic period, elaborate sacrifices became closely linked with political power.
Royal rituals such as Ashvamedha, Rajasuya and Vajapeya strengthened the symbolic authority of kings while simultaneously enhancing the importance of the priestly class.
For exams, Adhvaryu—Yajurveda is an essential pair.
