94. The Soma mentioned frequently in the Rigveda was:
Correct Answer
B. A deity and a ritual drink
Explanation
Soma in the Rigvedic tradition refers both to a sacred ritual drink and to the deity associated with that drink.
An entire Mandala of the Rigveda, the ninth Mandala, is largely devoted to Soma hymns.
During Vedic sacrifices, Soma juice was ritually prepared, filtered and offered to the gods, and priests and participants could consume it in prescribed contexts.
Indra is frequently described as drinking Soma before heroic deeds, especially his battle with Vritra.
The exact botanical identity of the original Soma plant remains debated among scholars, and no proposed identification has achieved universal acceptance.
Therefore, examination answers should avoid confidently identifying Soma with a specific modern plant unless the question provides a particular historical source or theory.
In Vedic religious thought, Soma was associated with vitality, inspiration, divine power and immortality.
In later traditions, Soma also became strongly identified with the Moon, but the Rigvedic ritual drink remains the key context for Early Vedic studies.
Soma's importance demonstrates the close relationship between ritual substances, sacrifice and divine worship.
For exams, remember three facts: Soma is both deity and sacred drink; the ninth Mandala of the Rigveda is especially devoted to Soma; and Indra is frequently associated with drinking Soma.
It should not be confused with Sura, another intoxicating beverage mentioned in ancient Indian texts.
