A. 16A. 16

Explanation

The correct answer is 16.
Ancient Buddhist literature, especially the Anguttara Nikaya, refers to sixteen major territorial states known as the Mahajanapadas.
They emerged during a period of major political, economic and social transformation in northern India.
The sixteen commonly listed Mahajanapadas were Anga, Magadha, Kashi, Kosala, Vajji, Malla, Chedi, Vatsa, Kuru, Panchala, Matsya, Surasena, Assaka or Ashmaka, Avanti, Gandhara and Kamboja.
Some were monarchies, while others developed forms of oligarchic or gana-sangha government.
Among these states, Magadha eventually became the most powerful.
Its advantages included fertile agricultural land, access to important rivers, availability of resources and capable rulers such as Bimbisara and Ajatashatru.
The Mahajanapada period is also important because it formed the political background in which Buddhism and Jainism developed.
For examination purposes, the key association is: 16 Mahajanapadas → around the 6th century BCE → age of Buddha and Mahavira.
Hence option (a), 16, is correct.
