Who was the founder of the Pala Dynasty?
Correct Answer
D. GopalaD.
Explanation
Gopala was the founder of the Pala dynasty, which became an important political power in Bengal and Bihar.
His rise is particularly noteworthy because historical accounts describe him as having been selected or elected by regional chiefs to bring an end to political disorder.
This makes his accession an unusual episode in early medieval Indian political history.
Gopala was succeeded by Dharmapala, under whom Pala power expanded considerably.
Dharmapala became involved in the tripartite struggle for control of Kannauj against the Gurjara-Pratiharas and Rashtrakutas.
Devapala was another powerful Pala ruler and further extended the dynasty's influence.
The Palas are also remembered for their patronage of Buddhism and major centres of learning.
Dharmapala is associated with the establishment of Vikramashila, while institutions such as Nalanda also received Pala patronage.
Pala-period art, particularly Buddhist sculpture and manuscript traditions, became influential beyond eastern India.
For competitive examinations, remember: Gopala → founder; Dharmapala → major expansion
Vikramashila; Devapala → powerful successor.
Therefore, Gopala is the correct answer.
परीक्षा के लिए याद रखें: Gopala → Founder of Pala Dynasty; Dharmapala → expansion + Vikramashila; Devapala → powerful Pala ruler।
