🚀 About SWOT Satellite
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite was launched in 2022 as a joint mission between NASA and CNES.
The main objective of this mission is to collect precise data on how Earth’s water bodies—such as oceans, rivers, and lakes—change over time.
⚙️ Key Features of SWOT Satellite
SWOT uses an advanced instrument known as the Ka-band Radar Interferometer (KaRIn). This technology enables the satellite to measure the height, width, and elevation of surface water bodies with high accuracy.
The satellite works by bouncing microwaves off the surface of water and calculating the return time, allowing scientists to track dynamic water movement in real time. It provides high spatial resolution data, making it far more detailed than previous missions.
SWOT has the capability to monitor over 55% of large-scale global floods during their entire lifecycle due to its frequent Earth orbits. It circles the Earth and scans nearly 90% of the planet every 21 days.
🌍 Functions and Capabilities
The SWOT satellite can observe almost all rivers wider than 330 feet and more than one million lakes and reservoirs larger than 5 acres. This makes it a powerful tool for global water monitoring.
It is also capable of detecting very small differences in ocean surface elevation, especially around currents and eddies. These areas play a crucial role in absorbing heat and carbon from the atmosphere, which is important for understanding climate change.
🌱 Significance
The new ocean floor mapping using SWOT data will help scientists better understand ocean circulation, climate patterns, flood forecasting, and water resource management. It also contributes to improved disaster preparedness and environmental monitoring.
Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT)
