Canary Islands | कैनरी द्वीपसमूह
Location
The Canary Islands are a volcanic archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean off the northwestern coast of Africa. They form part of the Macaronesia geographical region.
Political Status
The Canary Islands are an autonomous community of Spain. Therefore, the statement that they are a French territory is incorrect.
Geographical Position
The archipelago lies relatively close to the coast of Morocco and Western Sahara. Geographically it is associated with the African region, while politically it is an integral part of Spain and therefore the European Union.
Main Islands
The major islands include Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. La Graciosa is also recognised as an inhabited island of the archipelago.
Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest and most populous island in the Canary Islands. It has an area of roughly 2,034 square kilometres.
Capitals
The autonomous community has two co-capitals: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Volcanic Origin
The Canary Islands were formed by volcanic processes over millions of years. Volcanic activity continues to shape the archipelago.
Mount Teide
Mount Teide is located on Tenerife. At approximately 3,715 metres above sea level, it is the highest point in Spain and one of the world's prominent ocean-island volcanoes.
Climate
The islands generally experience a subtropical climate moderated by the Atlantic Ocean, trade winds and the cold Canary Current.
Macaronesia
Macaronesia is a biogeographical region of North Atlantic archipelagos that includes the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde.
