Census 2027: Key Overview (English)
The Union Government released a 40-question schedule for the Population Enumeration phase of Census 2027 on 14 August 2026. The schedule covers demographic, educational and socio-economic details and seeks certain identification numbers where applicable.

English: The Census operates under the Census Act, 1948. The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India is responsible for preparing schedules, training enumerators and tabulating results.

English: Census 2027 is described as India’s first digital census. Data collection will use electronic devices in many areas instead of paper schedules. The House Listing and Housing Census phase began on 1 April 2026.

English: The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs approved comprehensive caste enumeration on 30 April 2025. In the notified questionnaire, Question 10 is an open-ended field labelled “Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Caste”. This is the first comprehensive caste enumeration of all communities in independent India.

English: The Population Enumeration schedule asks for identification numbers where applicable: Aadhaar, voter ID, driving licence and passport. It also records socio-economic items such as digital literacy, total number of bank accounts, and the place where COVID‑19 vaccination was received.

English: The Population Enumeration phase starts on 17 August 2026 in Ladakh and the snowbound parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The rest of India will be enumerated in February 2027.
