Climate of West Bengal

Introduction

West Bengal has remarkable climatic diversity despite its relatively compact geographical area. The state extends from the Himalayan mountains in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south. Between these two extremes lie the Terai-Dooars region, the Gangetic plains, the western plateau fringe and the coastal-deltaic areas.

Because of this geographical diversity, temperature, rainfall, humidity and seasonal conditions vary considerably from one part of the state to another. Darjeeling and other Himalayan areas experience comparatively cool conditions, while the western districts experience much hotter summers. The southern coastal and deltaic areas remain humid and are strongly influenced by the Bay of Bengal.

For WBPSC, West Bengal Police, Clerkship, Miscellaneous Services and other state examinations, candidates should understand not merely individual rainfall or temperature facts but also the geographical reasons behind these climatic differences.

1. General Character of West Bengal's Climate

Most of West Bengal experiences a tropical monsoon climate, but altitude and distance from the sea produce substantial regional variations.

Three geographical controls are especially important:

Latitude: West Bengal lies in the tropical and subtropical part of eastern India.

Altitude: The Himalayan north is considerably cooler than the plains.

Bay of Bengal: The sea strongly influences humidity, rainfall, cyclones and temperatures, particularly in southern West Bengal.

The southwest monsoon provides the largest proportion of annual rainfall.

2. Major Controls of Climate

2.1 The Himalayas

The Himalayas influence West Bengal's climate in several ways. The mountains obstruct moisture-bearing winds, producing heavy rainfall in the northern foothills and adjoining areas.

Altitude also causes temperatures to decline considerably in the Darjeeling-Kalimpong Himalayan region.

2.2 Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal is one of the most important climatic influences on southern West Bengal. It supplies moisture to monsoon winds and helps maintain high humidity.

Depressions and cyclonic systems originating over the Bay can produce intense rainfall.

2.3 Relief

Relief causes strong regional climatic contrasts. Mountain slopes, foothills, plains, plateau margins and coastal areas respond differently to atmospheric conditions.

2.4 Distance from the Sea

Coastal areas experience greater maritime influence and therefore generally have smaller temperature ranges than inland western districts.

Western districts such as Purulia are farther from direct maritime influence and can experience much greater summer heat.

3. Seasons of West Bengal

For examination purposes, West Bengal's climate can broadly be studied through four seasonal phases:

  1. Winter

  2. Summer or pre-monsoon season

  3. Southwest monsoon or rainy season

  4. Retreating/post-monsoon season

4. Winter Season

Winter generally extends from approximately December to February.

Temperatures fall across the state, but the intensity of winter varies considerably.

The Himalayan region experiences much colder conditions than the plains. Darjeeling and adjoining high-altitude areas may experience very low temperatures.

The Gangetic plains, including Kolkata, experience comparatively mild winters.

Western districts can experience cool nights because of continental influence and relatively dry atmospheric conditions.

Winter is generally the driest major season, although occasional rainfall may occur due to western disturbances and other atmospheric systems.

Exam Point

Do not assume that the entire state experiences the same winter conditions. Altitude produces a major north-south contrast.

5. Summer or Pre-Monsoon Season

The pre-monsoon hot season broadly extends from March to May.

Temperatures rise rapidly during this period.

The western districts—particularly the plateau-fringe and Rarh areas—can become extremely hot because of their inland location and stronger continental influence.

Purulia, Bankura, Paschim Bardhaman and adjoining areas frequently experience much greater heat than the Himalayan north.

Southern Bengal remains humid because of the influence of the Bay of Bengal.

6. Kalbaishakhi or Nor'westers

One of the most important climatic phenomena of West Bengal is the Kalbaishakhi, commonly known in English as a Nor'wester.

These are violent pre-monsoon thunderstorms occurring mainly during the hot season.

They are generally associated with:

  • strong winds,

  • thunderstorms,

  • lightning,

  • sudden rainfall,

  • and sometimes hail.

They often develop during the afternoon or evening.

Kalbaishakhi storms can provide temporary relief from intense summer heat.

They are agriculturally important because pre-monsoon rainfall can benefit some crops, although severe storms may also damage standing crops, trees, houses and infrastructure.

Exam Trap

Kalbaishakhi is primarily a pre-monsoon phenomenon, not the main southwest monsoon itself.

7. Southwest Monsoon Season

The southwest monsoon is the principal rainy season of West Bengal.

It generally dominates from June to September, although the exact onset and withdrawal vary from year to year.

Moisture-bearing winds from the Bay of Bengal bring widespread rainfall.

The interaction of monsoon winds with Himalayan and sub-Himalayan relief produces particularly heavy rainfall in parts of North Bengal.

The monsoon is crucial for:

  • agriculture,

  • reservoirs,

  • groundwater recharge,

  • river discharge,

  • wetlands,

  • forests,

  • and the overall water economy of the state.

However, excessive monsoon rainfall can also cause flooding, landslides and riverbank erosion.

8. Why Does North Bengal Receive Heavy Rainfall?

North Bengal includes Himalayan and sub-Himalayan landscapes.

Moist monsoon winds encounter elevated terrain and are forced upward. As the air rises, it cools and condenses, producing substantial orographic rainfall.

Consequently, the Himalayan foothills and Dooars receive very high rainfall.

This rainfall feeds numerous rivers such as the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka and Raidak.

During periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall, these rivers may rise rapidly and cause floods in adjoining plains.

9. Rainfall in the Western Districts

The western plateau-fringe districts generally receive less rainfall than the very wet northern foothills.

Purulia and adjoining western areas are comparatively drier.

This regional difference has major implications for:

  • agriculture,

  • irrigation requirements,

  • drought vulnerability,

  • water conservation,

  • groundwater use.

The western part of the state therefore experiences a stronger risk of seasonal water stress than the wetter northern region.

10. Climate of the Gangetic Plains

Much of central and southern West Bengal belongs to the Gangetic plain.

This region generally experiences:

  • hot summers,

  • humid monsoon conditions,

  • substantial seasonal rainfall,

  • and mild winters.

The climate is strongly monsoonal.

The Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system and its surrounding plains support dense settlement and intensive agriculture.

11. Climate of Kolkata

Kolkata has a tropical wet-and-dry type of monsoon-influenced climate, with high humidity for much of the year.

Summers are hot and humid.

Pre-monsoon thunderstorms provide occasional relief.

The southwest monsoon brings the principal rainfall.

Winters are generally mild and relatively dry compared with the monsoon months.

Because Kolkata is comparatively close to the Bay of Bengal, maritime influence moderates temperature extremes to some degree compared with the western interior.

12. Climate of the Darjeeling Himalayan Region

The Darjeeling Himalayan region differs greatly from the southern plains.

Altitude is the primary reason.

Important characteristics include:

  • relatively cool summers,

  • cold winters,

  • heavy monsoon rainfall,

  • frequent cloud and mist,

  • and strong altitudinal variation.

The climate has contributed significantly to the development of tea cultivation in the Darjeeling region.

13. Climate of the Terai-Dooars

The Terai-Dooars belt lies immediately south of the Himalayan region.

It is characterised by:

  • high rainfall,

  • high humidity,

  • numerous rivers,

  • dense vegetation,

  • and generally moist conditions.

Tea cultivation is also important in this region.

Heavy monsoon rainfall and rapidly flowing Himalayan rivers make parts of the region vulnerable to floods.

14. Climate of the Western Plateau Fringe

The western districts adjoining the Chota Nagpur Plateau experience a more continental climatic influence.

The region commonly experiences:

  • very hot summers,

  • relatively cool winter nights,

  • comparatively lower rainfall,

  • greater temperature extremes,

  • and periodic drought or water stress.

Purulia is an important example.

This is markedly different from both Darjeeling's mountain climate and the humid coastal environment of the Sundarbans.

15. Coastal and Sundarbans Climate

The southernmost part of West Bengal is strongly influenced by the Bay of Bengal.

Important climatic characteristics include:

  • high humidity,

  • maritime influence,

  • monsoon rainfall,

  • relatively moderated temperatures,

  • tropical cyclones,

  • storm surges,

  • and saline-water intrusion risks.

The Sundarbans is particularly vulnerable because of its low elevation and complex network of tidal channels.

16. Tropical Cyclones

The Bay of Bengal is highly significant for tropical cyclone formation.

Cyclones can affect the coastal districts of West Bengal, particularly the lower delta.

Major hazards associated with cyclones include:

  • extremely strong winds,

  • heavy rainfall,

  • flooding,

  • storm surges,

  • embankment breaches,

  • saline-water intrusion,

  • damage to agriculture,

  • and destruction of houses and infrastructure.

The Sundarbans is especially vulnerable to storm surges because of its low-lying deltaic landscape.

17. What Is a Storm Surge?

A storm surge is an abnormal rise in sea level generated mainly by strong cyclonic winds and low atmospheric pressure.

It should not be confused with ordinary rainfall flooding.

When a cyclone approaches the coast, strong winds can push seawater towards land. In low-lying coastal regions, this can cause severe inundation.

In the Sundarbans, storm surges can damage embankments and introduce saline water into agricultural land and freshwater environments.

18. Retreating and Post-Monsoon Season

The southwest monsoon begins withdrawing after the main rainy season.

During the post-monsoon months, rainfall generally decreases, temperatures gradually decline and atmospheric conditions begin moving towards winter.

However, the Bay of Bengal can remain cyclonically active during this transition period.

Therefore, coastal West Bengal can still experience significant rainfall and storms during the post-monsoon season.

19. Rainfall Distribution

Rainfall is not uniformly distributed across West Bengal.

Broadly:

Very high rainfall: Himalayan foothills and parts of the Dooars.

Substantial rainfall: Gangetic plains and much of southern Bengal.

Comparatively lower rainfall: Western plateau-fringe districts.

The pattern is influenced by:

  • monsoon winds,

  • topography,

  • elevation,

  • distance from moisture sources,

  • depressions,

  • and cyclonic systems.

20. Temperature Distribution

Temperature also varies considerably.

Himalayan Region

Cooler because of altitude.

Plains

Hot summers and mild winters.

Western Districts

Greater extremes, particularly intense summer heat.

Coastal Areas

Greater maritime influence and relatively smaller temperature ranges.

Thus, altitude and continentality are two major factors explaining West Bengal's temperature variations.

21. Humidity

Humidity is generally high during the monsoon season.

Southern Bengal, especially the coastal and deltaic region, experiences high humidity because of proximity to the Bay of Bengal.

North Bengal's wet foothill areas also experience substantial humidity.

Western districts may become relatively dry during parts of the pre-monsoon season.

22. Climate and Agriculture

Climate directly influences West Bengal's agricultural geography.

Rice

Rice requires substantial water and benefits greatly from monsoon rainfall. It is therefore closely connected with the state's monsoonal climate.

Tea

Tea cultivation thrives in the humid, high-rainfall environments of Darjeeling and the Dooars.

Jute

Warm, humid conditions and adequate rainfall favour jute cultivation in the Gangetic plains.

Potato and Winter Crops

The cooler winter season supports a variety of rabi and horticultural crops.

Thus, West Bengal's climatic diversity contributes to agricultural diversity.

23. Climate and Natural Vegetation

Climate is one of the principal controls of vegetation.

Heavy rainfall in northern areas supports moist forests.

The western districts, receiving comparatively less rainfall, have different vegetation characteristics.

The Sundarbans supports mangrove vegetation, adapted to tidal, saline and waterlogged conditions.

Therefore, rainfall alone does not determine vegetation in the coastal delta; salinity and tidal conditions are also crucial.

24. Climate-Related Natural Hazards

Different parts of West Bengal face different climate-related hazards.

RegionMajor Hazard
Darjeeling HimalayaHeavy rainfall and landslides
Terai-DooarsFloods and river erosion
Gangetic plainsFloods and waterlogging
Western districtsHeatwaves and drought/water stress
Sundarbans/coastCyclones, storm surges and salinity

This regional pattern is extremely important for competitive examinations.

25. Landslides in the Himalayan Region

Heavy rainfall can saturate slopes and reduce their stability.

Consequently, the Darjeeling-Kalimpong Himalayan region is susceptible to landslides during periods of intense monsoon rainfall.

Road construction, slope modification, drainage problems and land-use changes can further influence landslide risk.

26. Floods in West Bengal

Flooding can result from different mechanisms in different regions.

In North Bengal, intense rainfall and rapidly flowing Himalayan rivers can produce sudden increases in discharge.

In the Gangetic plains, heavy rainfall, high river levels, sedimentation and drainage congestion can contribute to flooding.

In coastal Bengal, rainfall flooding can combine with tidal effects, cyclones and storm surges.

Therefore, the statement "all floods in West Bengal have the same cause" is incorrect.

27. Drought and Water Stress

Although West Bengal is generally regarded as a monsoon state, drought-like conditions can affect the comparatively drier western districts.

Rainfall variability can create agricultural stress.

Water conservation, irrigation systems, reservoirs, watershed management and groundwater management are therefore especially important in these areas.

28. Heatwaves

Western and inland districts can experience severe heat during the pre-monsoon season.

Heatwaves become especially dangerous when high temperatures persist for several days.

Urban areas can also experience enhanced heat because buildings, roads and concrete surfaces store solar energy, contributing to an urban heat island effect.

29. Climate Change and West Bengal

Climate change has particular importance for West Bengal because the state contains mountains, densely populated plains and a highly vulnerable deltaic coast.

Important areas of concern include:

  • rising temperatures,

  • extreme rainfall,

  • heatwaves,

  • changing rainfall patterns,

  • coastal flooding,

  • sea-level rise,

  • salinity intrusion,

  • cyclone impacts,

  • ecosystem stress.

The Sundarbans deserves particular attention because environmental changes can affect both ecosystems and human settlements.

30. Why the Sundarbans Is Especially Vulnerable

Several factors combine:

  1. Low elevation

  2. Tidal environment

  3. Cyclone exposure

  4. Storm surges

  5. Salinity

  6. River and coastal erosion

  7. Dense human dependence on natural resources

This makes the Sundarbans one of the most important climate-vulnerability regions for West Bengal examinations.
