Why in News?
User trials of the Extended Range Anti-Submarine Rocket were successfully conducted from Indian Navy ship INS Kavaratti between 23 June and 7 July 2025.
What is ERASR?
The Extended Range Anti-Submarine Rocket, or ERASR, is an indigenous anti-submarine weapon designed to engage underwater submarine targets. It is fired from Indigenous Rocket Launchers installed onboard Indian naval ships.
Developer
ERASR was designed and developed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment, Pune, of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
Supporting DRDO Laboratories
ARDE developed the system in association with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory and the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory.
Twin-Rocket Motor
The rocket uses a twin-rocket motor configuration. This allows it to address a broad range of engagement distances while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
Electronic Time Fuze
The ERASR incorporates an indigenously developed Electronic Time Fuze, an important component for ensuring warhead functioning at the required point in the engagement sequence.
User Trials
A total of 17 ERASR rockets were evaluated at different ranges during the user trials. The tests demonstrated required range performance as well as functioning of the Electronic Time Fuze and warhead.
INS Kavaratti
INS Kavaratti is an indigenously built anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette of the Indian Navy and belongs to the Kamorta-class of ships under Project 28.
Production Partners
Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hyderabad, and Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited, Nagpur, are production partners for the ERASR rockets.
Strategic Importance
Anti-submarine warfare is essential for protecting naval task forces, sea lanes and strategic maritime assets from hostile submarines. An indigenous rocket system strengthens India's ability to reduce dependence on imported underwater-warfare weapons.
Important Dates
- 23 June 2025: ERASR user-trial series began from INS Kavaratti.
- 7 July 2025: User-trial series concluded.
- 8 July 2025: Ministry of Defence publicly announced successful completion of the trials.
