1. Why is the GSLV-F17/EOS-05 Mission in News?

On 4 September 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched the GSLV-F17 mission carrying EOS-05. The mission is particularly important because EOS-05 is India’s first imaging satellite designed to conduct Earth observation from geosynchronous orbit. This gives the mission considerable importance for UPSC Prelims 2027 because it connects current affairs with satellite orbits, Earth observation, launch vehicles, remote sensing and India’s space programme.

2. What is EOS-05?

EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth observation spacecraft developed for imaging the Earth from geosynchronous orbit. EOS stands for Earth Observation Satellite. Unlike conventional communication satellites, Earth observation satellites are primarily designed to collect information about the Earth’s surface, atmosphere, oceans and environmental processes.

3. Why is EOS-05 Special?

The most important examination fact is that EOS-05 is India’s first imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit. This distinguishes it from many Indian remote-sensing satellites that operate in Low Earth Orbit or Sun-Synchronous Polar Orbit.

4. Launch Date

The GSLV-F17/EOS-05 mission was launched on 4 September 2026.

5. Launch Site

The mission was launched from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, Sriharikota.

6. Where is Sriharikota?

Sriharikota is a barrier island located on the coast of Andhra Pradesh. It houses the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the principal spaceport of India.

7. Why are East-Coast Launch Sites Advantageous?

For launches towards the east, the rotation of the Earth provides an additional velocity advantage. Moreover, launch trajectories can pass over the Bay of Bengal, reducing risks to densely populated areas during several mission profiles.

8. Launch Vehicle

EOS-05 was launched aboard GSLV-F17.

9. Full Form of GSLV

GSLV stands for Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle.

10. GSLV-F17 Flight Number

GSLV-F17 represented the 19th flight of India’s GSLV programme.

11. Intended Orbit

GSLV-F17 successfully placed EOS-05 into the intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit, or Sub-GTO.

12. Transfer Orbit Concept

A transfer orbit is an intermediate orbit used while moving a spacecraft towards its final operational orbit. The launch vehicle does not necessarily place a geosynchronous spacecraft directly into its final circular orbit.

13. What is an Orbit?

An orbit is the gravitationally governed path followed by one body around another. Artificial satellites remain in orbit because their forward motion continuously balances the tendency to fall towards the Earth under gravity.

14. Low Earth Orbit

Low Earth Orbit, commonly called LEO, extends from relatively low altitudes above the Earth to roughly 2,000 km. Many Earth observation satellites, crewed spacecraft and scientific missions operate in this region.

15. Medium Earth Orbit

Medium Earth Orbit lies above LEO and below geosynchronous altitude. Navigation satellite constellations frequently use medium-altitude orbits.

16. Geosynchronous Orbit

A geosynchronous satellite has an orbital period equal to the Earth’s rotational period. Therefore, it returns to the same position in the sky at the same time each day.

17. Geostationary Orbit

A geostationary orbit is a special type of geosynchronous orbit. It must be circular, lie in the equatorial plane and move in the same direction as the Earth’s rotation.

18. Geostationary Satellite as Seen from Earth

A satellite in an ideal geostationary orbit appears fixed over one longitude to an observer on Earth.

19. Geosynchronous versus Geostationary

Every geostationary satellite is geosynchronous, but every geosynchronous satellite need not be geostationary. A geosynchronous orbit may be inclined or elliptical, in which case the satellite does not appear continuously stationary over one point.

20. Approximate Geostationary Altitude

The geostationary orbital altitude is approximately 35,786 km above the Earth’s equator.

21. Orbital Period

The orbital period of a geostationary satellite corresponds to one sidereal day, approximately 23 hours 56 minutes.

22. Why is Geosynchronous Imaging Important?

A major advantage is the ability to maintain persistent or frequent observation of a broad region. A satellite in low orbit passes over a location only during particular orbital passes, whereas a suitable geosynchronous platform can repeatedly observe a large geographical area.

23. Temporal Resolution

Temporal resolution refers to how frequently a satellite can observe the same location. High temporal resolution is important when conditions change rapidly.

24. Spatial Resolution

Spatial resolution refers broadly to the smallest ground feature or area that can be distinguished in satellite imagery. Higher spatial resolution permits finer details to be observed.

25. Spectral Resolution

Spectral resolution refers to the ability of a sensor to distinguish different wavelength bands of electromagnetic radiation.

26. Radiometric Resolution

Radiometric resolution indicates a sensor’s ability to distinguish small differences in the intensity of received electromagnetic energy.

27. Earth Observation

Earth observation involves gathering information about the Earth’s physical, biological and human systems using satellites, aircraft, ground instruments and related technologies.

28. Remote Sensing

Remote sensing means acquiring information about an object or phenomenon without making direct physical contact with it. Satellite imaging is one of the most important forms of remote sensing.

29. Passive Remote Sensing

Passive sensors measure naturally available radiation, such as reflected sunlight or thermal radiation emitted by the Earth.

30. Active Remote Sensing

Active sensors transmit their own energy towards a target and measure the returned signal. Radar is a major example.

31. Radar Remote Sensing

Radar systems transmit microwave signals and analyse the reflected energy. Their ability to operate independently of sunlight is a major advantage.

32. Synthetic Aperture Radar

Synthetic Aperture Radar, or SAR, uses the motion of the radar platform and sophisticated signal processing to create high-resolution radar imagery.

33. Optical Imaging

Optical remote sensing generally depends on reflected or emitted electromagnetic radiation in optical and related spectral bands. Cloud cover can obstruct many optical observations.

34. Weather Monitoring

Geosynchronous observations are particularly valuable for monitoring rapidly evolving atmospheric systems because the same broad region can be observed repeatedly.

35. Cyclone Monitoring

Frequent observations help meteorologists track cyclone development, cloud organisation, movement and associated weather systems.

36. Disaster Management

Earth observation satellites contribute to disaster preparedness, response and recovery by providing information relating to floods, cyclones, fires, landslides and other hazards.

37. Flood Monitoring

Satellite observations can help identify inundated areas, monitor river basins and support damage assessment.

38. Forest Monitoring

Remote sensing can be used to monitor forest cover, deforestation, vegetation health and forest fires.

39. Agriculture

46. Department of Space

The Department of Space is responsible for implementing India’s space programme. ISRO is its principal research and development organisation.

47. Headquarters of ISRO

ISRO is headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

48. Satish Dhawan Space Centre

Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, is located at Sriharikota and functions as India’s major orbital launch centre.

49. Why is it Called SHAR?

The historical name Sriharikota Range contributed to the abbreviation SHAR, which continues to be associated with the centre.

50. Major Indian Launch Vehicles

India’s major launch vehicle families include PSLV, GSLV, LVM3 and SSLV.

51. PSLV

PSLV stands for Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. It has been extensively used for placing Earth observation and other satellites into polar and Sun-Synchronous orbits, though it has also flown missions to other orbital configurations.

52. GSLV

GSLV is designed particularly for missions requiring higher-energy trajectories, including the placement of satellites towards geosynchronous orbits.

53. LVM3

LVM3 is India’s heavy-lift operational launch vehicle and has been used for large communication satellites and major missions.

54. SSLV

SSLV stands for Small Satellite Launch Vehicle and is intended to provide flexible launch capability for smaller satellites.

Satellite data can support governance in agriculture, disaster management, infrastructure, environmental protection, urban planning and resource management.

71. Climate Monitoring

Long-term satellite observations are valuable for studying changes in vegetation, glaciers, oceans, land use and atmospheric processes.

72. Weather versus Climate

Weather describes short-term atmospheric conditions, while climate refers to long-term statistical patterns. Satellites contribute data relevant to both.

73. Satellite Revisit Time

Revisit time is the interval between successive observations of the same location by a satellite or satellite constellation.

74. Persistent Observation

Persistent observation refers to the ability to observe a region continuously or at very frequent intervals. Geosynchronous platforms are particularly useful where broad-area persistence is required.

75. Trade-Off in Satellite Orbits

No single orbit is ideal for every application. Low orbits can provide closer views of the Earth, while high-altitude geosynchronous platforms offer extensive coverage and high temporal availability over a broad region.

76. Coverage Advantage

At geosynchronous altitude, a satellite can observe a very large portion of the Earth compared with a low-orbiting spacecraft.

77. Distance Challenge

Because a geosynchronous spacecraft is far from the Earth, imaging systems must overcome substantial technical challenges to achieve useful spatial detail.

78. Communication Delay

The large distance to geostationary orbit also produces greater signal propagation delay compared with low-orbit satellite systems.

79. Orbital Inclination

Inclination describes the angle between the orbital plane and the Earth’s equatorial plane.

80. Equatorial Orbit

A geostationary satellite must have essentially zero inclination relative to the equatorial plane.

81. Circularity Requirement

A true geostationary orbit must be essentially circular. An elliptical geosynchronous orbit does not remain fixed in the sky.

82. Direction of Motion

A geostationary satellite travels from west to east, in the same general direction as the Earth’s rotation.

83. Sun-Synchronous Orbit

A Sun-Synchronous Orbit is generally a near-polar orbit designed so that a satellite passes over a given location at approximately the same local solar time on successive visits.

84. Why Sun-Synchronous Orbits are Useful

Similar lighting conditions during successive passes make them particularly useful for comparing optical images over time.

85. Polar Orbit

A polar or near-polar satellite travels over or close to the Earth’s poles, allowing the rotating Earth beneath it to provide broad global coverage over repeated passes.

86. Geosynchronous Observation versus Polar Observation

Geosynchronous observation provides persistent coverage of a broad region, whereas polar and Sun-Synchronous systems can provide systematic coverage of different parts of the globe over successive passes.

87. Earth Observation Satellite Series

India has operated numerous Earth observation missions for resources, agriculture, oceans, cartography, disaster management and environmental monitoring.

88. EOS Naming

The EOS designation is used for a range of Indian Earth observation spacecraft. Candidates should not assume that all EOS satellites use identical sensors or identical orbits.

89. Important Prelims Trap

EOS does not mean that every satellite carrying the designation operates in geostationary or geosynchronous orbit. The orbit depends on mission requirements.

90. Another Prelims Trap

GSLV and geostationary satellite are not synonymous. GSLV is a launch vehicle, whereas geostationary describes a particular type of satellite orbit.

91. Another Prelims Trap

A geosynchronous satellite does not necessarily appear stationary from the ground. Only a geostationary satellite satisfies the additional orbital conditions required to appear fixed.

92. Another Prelims Trap

Geostationary orbit is located above the equator, not above the poles.

93. Another Prelims Trap

A geostationary satellite does not orbit once every 24-hour solar day exactly. Its orbital period corresponds approximately to the Earth’s sidereal rotation period.

94. Another Prelims Trap

Remote sensing does not necessarily require visible light. Microwave, infrared and other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum are extensively used.

95. Another Prelims Trap

Radar is an active remote-sensing system because it transmits electromagnetic energy and measures the returned signal.

96. Satellite Applications in Governance
