Nuclear Fission |
Nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits into two lighter nuclei, usually releasing neutrons and a large amount of energy.
Fission of uranium-235 can occur after absorption of a neutron. Many different fission-product combinations are possible, so a single equation represents only one possible channel.
Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann experimentally demonstrated nuclear fission products in 1938, while Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch provided the physical interpretation and named the process nuclear fission.
Nuclear weapons based on fission use rapidly multiplying uncontrolled chain reactions involving fissile materials such as uranium-235 or plutonium-239. Nuclear power reactors instead maintain a controlled chain reaction.
