Scientists reported a new owlfly species from Kerala named Protidricerus albocapitatus. The discovery was significant because it represented the first new species reported from this lineage in the region after a gap of 134 years.
वैज्ञानिकों ने केरल से उल्लू-मक्खी की एक नई प्रजाति प्रोटिड्रिसेरस अल्बोकैपिटेटस की जानकारी दी। यह खोज महत्वपूर्ण थी क्योंकि इस समूह से संबंधित नई प्रजाति लंबे 134 वर्षों के अंतराल के बाद दर्ज की गई।

The species was discovered in the Nedumkayam forest of Malappuram district in Kerala. The forest forms part of the biologically rich landscape associated with the Western Ghats.

Protidricerus albocapitatus is an owlfly belonging to the insect order Neuroptera. Under the classification referenced in the discovery, it belongs to the family Myrmeleontidae, a group that also includes antlions.
प्रोटिड्रिसेरस अल्बोकैपिटेटस न्यूरोप्टेरा गण से संबंधित उल्लू-मक्खी है। खोज में प्रयुक्त वर्गीकरण के अनुसार यह मायरमेलियोन्टिडी कुल से संबंधित है, जिसमें एंटलायन भी शामिल हैं।

Owlflies are predatory insects known for their large eyes, elongated bodies and prominent antennae. Adults are aerial predators and generally feed on other insects. Their appearance can superficially resemble dragonflies, but they belong to a different insect order.
उल्लू-मक्खियाँ शिकारी कीट हैं जिन्हें बड़ी आँखों, लंबे शरीर और प्रमुख स्पर्शकों के लिए जाना जाता है। वयस्क उल्लू-मक्खियाँ उड़ते हुए अन्य कीटों का शिकार करती हैं। उनका बाहरी स्वरूप कुछ हद तक ड्रैगनफ्लाई जैसा दिखाई दे सकता है, किंतु वे अलग कीट गण से संबंधित हैं।
Distinctive Appearance | विशिष्ट स्वरूप
The newly described species is noted for a whitish or white-tufted head and clubbed antennae. The species name albocapitatus itself refers to its characteristic pale or white-headed appearance.
नई प्रजाति की पहचान सफेद अथवा सफेद गुच्छेदार सिर और गदा के आकार वाले स्पर्शकों से की जाती है। अल्बोकैपिटेटस नाम भी इसके विशिष्ट हल्के अथवा सफेद सिर की ओर संकेत करता है।

The discovery adds to knowledge of India's Neuropteran diversity and demonstrates the importance of detailed taxonomic surveys in the Western Ghats. According to the information associated with the discovery, Kerala's known owlfly diversity increased to five species and India's known total to 37.
यह खोज भारत की न्यूरोप्टेरन जैव विविधता के ज्ञान को बढ़ाती है और पश्चिमी घाट में विस्तृत वर्गिकी सर्वेक्षणों के महत्व को दर्शाती है। खोज से संबंधित जानकारी के अनुसार केरल में ज्ञात उल्लू-मक्खी प्रजातियों की संख्या बढ़कर पाँच और भारत में ज्ञात कुल संख्या 37 हो गई।
