Great Hornbill | ग्रेट हॉर्नबिल
Why in News?
A Great Hornbill, locally known in Kerala as Malamuzhakki Vezhambal, was recently sighted near Kakkampara in the Ezhimala coastal belt of Kannur. The sighting attracted attention because the bird is normally associated with mature forest habitats rather than coastal landscapes.
About Great Hornbill
The Great Hornbill is one of the largest members of the hornbill family. It is also known as the Great Indian Hornbill, Great Pied Hornbill and Concave-casqued Hornbill.
Scientific Name
Its scientific name is Buceros bicornis.
Distribution
The species occurs in the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. In India, important populations are found in the Western Ghats and forested regions along the Himalayan foothills and Northeast India.
Habitat
Great Hornbills mainly inhabit wet evergreen and moist deciduous old-growth forests. They are often found at elevations of roughly 600 to 2,000 metres. Large, mature trees are particularly important because females nest inside natural tree cavities.
Physical Features
Adults may measure approximately 95 to 120 cm in length, with a wingspan of around 151 to 178 cm. The body and wings are largely black, while parts of the neck, abdomen and tail are white. A black band is visible across the white tail.
Casque
The most distinctive feature of the Great Hornbill is the large casque above its bill. The casque is a hollow structure and plays a role in display and social behaviour. Males may also use it during aerial combat.
Colouration
A preen gland near the tail produces an oily secretion. During grooming, the bird spreads this secretion over its plumage, contributing to yellowish or reddish colouration on parts of the bill, casque and feathers.
Male and Female Differences
Males and females are broadly similar, but males generally have larger bills and casques. The iris is typically red in males and pale or whitish in females.
Food
The Great Hornbill is mainly frugivorous and plays an important ecological role in dispersing the seeds of forest trees. It can also opportunistically feed on small mammals, reptiles and birds.
Conservation Status
The Great Hornbill is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Major threats include loss and fragmentation of mature forests and removal of large nesting trees.
Important State Fact
The Great Hornbill is the State Bird of Kerala and Arunachal Pradesh.
