PART I — ENGLISH

1. Introduction to the Rivers of West Bengal

West Bengal possesses one of the most geographically diverse river systems in eastern India. Its rivers originate in different physical regions, including the Himalayas, the Chota Nagpur Plateau, the western uplands and the Gangetic plains.

These rivers play a crucial role in the state's agriculture, irrigation, drinking-water supply, transportation, industrial development, fisheries, biodiversity and settlement patterns.

However, the rivers also create significant challenges, including floods, riverbank erosion, sedimentation, drainage congestion and coastal salinity.

The characteristics of West Bengal's rivers change considerably from north to south.

In North Bengal, rivers generally descend from the Himalayas and carry substantial quantities of water and sediment during the monsoon.

In western West Bengal, many rivers originate in the plateau region and experience considerable seasonal variations in discharge.

In the Gangetic plains, rivers generally flow through low-gradient alluvial terrain, forming floodplains, meanders and distributary channels.

In southern West Bengal, particularly the Sundarbans, river channels are strongly influenced by tides and estuarine processes.

Understanding these differences is essential for answering geography questions in West Bengal government examinations.

1.1 What Is a Drainage System?

A drainage system refers to the network of rivers, streams and other natural channels that collect and transport water from a particular area.

Important geographical terms include:

Drainage basin: The geographical area drained by a river and its tributaries.

Tributary: A river or stream that joins a larger river.

Distributary: A branch that separates from a main river and carries water away from it.

Watershed: A boundary separating two drainage basins.

Confluence: The point where two rivers meet.

Meander: A bend or curve in a river channel.

Floodplain: Relatively flat land adjoining a river that may be inundated during floods.

Estuary: The lower portion of a river system where freshwater and seawater interact.

Delta: A depositional landform associated with sediment accumulation near a river's mouth.

Tidal creek: A channel through which water flows under tidal influence, often in coastal wetlands.

These terms are frequently tested through conceptual and statement-based questions.

2. Major Drainage Systems of West Bengal

For examination purposes, the rivers of West Bengal can be understood through three major drainage associations.

Drainage systemImportant riversMajor characteristics
Ganga systemGanga, Bhagirathi–Hooghly, Mahananda, Damodar, Ajay, MayurakshiGangetic plains, western tributaries and deltaic drainage
Brahmaputra systemTeesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka, Raidak, SankoshHimalayan and North Bengal drainage
Subarnarekha systemSubarnarekha and its tributariesIndependent drainage towards the Bay of Bengal

This classification is useful, but students must understand that rivers of North Bengal do not all belong to the Brahmaputra system.

Important: The Mahananda belongs to the Ganga drainage system, whereas the Teesta belongs to the Brahmaputra–Jamuna drainage system.

3. The Ganga River in West Bengal

The Ganga is one of the most important rivers associated with West Bengal's geography, agriculture, economy and cultural history.

After flowing through the northern Indian plains, the Ganga reaches the eastern part of the subcontinent and passes through the Malda–Murshidabad region.

The Ganga system has played a major role in forming the fertile alluvial plains of southern West Bengal.

3.1 Ganga, Padma and Bhagirathi–Hooghly

In the Farakka region, the Ganga system is associated with two important downstream courses.

The principal eastern channel continues towards Bangladesh, where the river is known as the Padma.

The Bhagirathi–Hooghly is the major distributary system flowing southward through West Bengal.

The Bhagirathi–Hooghly eventually reaches the Bay of Bengal.

The river system supports numerous settlements, agricultural areas and industrial centres.

Examination point: Kolkata is situated on the Hooghly River, not directly on the main eastern channel of the Ganga.

3.2 Farakka Barrage

Farakka Barrage is situated on the Ganga in Murshidabad district.

It is among the most important river-control structures in eastern India.

The barrage became operational during the 1970s.

Its major purpose was to facilitate the diversion of water through a feeder canal towards the Bhagirathi–Hooghly system.

This was intended to improve river flow and assist navigation by addressing sediment-related problems affecting Kolkata Port.

A barrage differs from a large storage dam because it primarily regulates and diverts river water rather than storing a vast quantity behind a high structure.

Important facts

  • River: Ganga

  • Location: Murshidabad district

  • Structure: Barrage

  • Associated canal: Farakka Feeder Canal

  • Major historical objective: Supporting navigation in the Bhagirathi–Hooghly system

Exam trap: Farakka Barrage should not be described simply as a project constructed to eliminate floods.

4. Bhagirathi–Hooghly River System

The Bhagirathi–Hooghly is one of the most economically significant river systems of West Bengal.

It flows southward through the state and supports agriculture, navigation, trade, industries and urban settlements.

The name Bhagirathi is commonly associated with the upper portion of the river system, while Hooghly is used for its lower course.

4.1 Economic Importance

The river has contributed significantly to the historical development of Kolkata and surrounding urban centres.

Kolkata and Howrah stand on opposite sides of the Hooghly River.

The river provides an important navigational connection between inland areas and the Bay of Bengal.

It is associated with the Kolkata Dock System and the broader port infrastructure of the region.

The river also supports industries, water supply, fishing and transportation.

4.2 Important Associated Rivers

Several rivers and channels are connected with the Bhagirathi–Hooghly drainage system.

These include:

  1. Jalangi

  2. Churni

  3. Damodar

  4. Rupnarayan

  5. Haldi

However, students should distinguish between tributaries, distributaries and channels that join the lower estuarine system.

Not every associated river has the same geographical relationship with the Hooghly.

4.3 Tidal Influence

The lower Hooghly is influenced by tides from the Bay of Bengal.

Tidal action affects water levels, sediment movement, navigation and riverbank processes.

The interaction between freshwater discharge and tidal currents makes the lower river hydrologically complex.

5. Teesta River

The Teesta is one of the most important Himalayan rivers flowing through North Bengal.

It originates in the eastern Himalayan region of Sikkim.

After flowing through mountainous terrain, it enters the plains of northern West Bengal.

The river eventually flows into Bangladesh and joins the Brahmaputra–Jamuna drainage system.

5.1 Geographical Importance

The Teesta is associated with the Himalayan and foothill regions of North Bengal.

Its upper course has a relatively steep gradient, while the gradient decreases considerably after the river enters the plains.

During the monsoon, the river may carry large quantities of water and sediment.

This contributes to flooding, erosion and changes in river channels.

5.2 Teesta Barrage Project

The Teesta Barrage is located at Gajoldoba in Jalpaiguri district.

The project is an important irrigation-development initiative in North Bengal.

Its planned functions include irrigation development, water regulation and associated hydropower potential.

The Government of West Bengal identifies the Teesta Barrage Project as one of the major irrigation projects of the eastern region.

The project's official description includes planned irrigation and hydropower components; these should not automatically be interpreted as fully completed achievements.

Important examination facts

  • River: Teesta

  • Origin: Eastern Himalayas in Sikkim

  • West Bengal region: North Bengal

  • Downstream country: Bangladesh

  • Drainage system: Brahmaputra–Jamuna

  • Important barrage: Teesta Barrage

Exam trap: The Teesta is not a tributary of the Hooghly.

6. Mahananda River

The Mahananda is another important river of North Bengal.

It originates in the Himalayan foothill region near Darjeeling and flows through parts of North Bengal and adjoining areas.

The river is particularly important for the geography of the Siliguri and Malda regions.

Unlike several other Himalayan rivers of North Bengal, the Mahananda belongs to the Ganga drainage system.

This distinction is frequently useful in competitive examinations.

6.1 Importance

The Mahananda supports agriculture and settlements in its drainage basin.

Its water levels vary seasonally.

During periods of intense rainfall, the river and its tributaries may contribute to flooding and waterlogging.

The river is also associated with irrigation infrastructure in North Bengal.

Important facts

  • Origin: Himalayan foothill region

  • Important West Bengal regions: Siliguri and Malda

  • Drainage association: Ganga system

  • Main geographical feature: North Bengal river flowing towards the Ganga system

Exam trap: The Mahananda and Teesta should not be placed in the same drainage basin merely because both flow through North Bengal.

The Damodar is one of the most historically important rivers of western West Bengal.

It originates in the Chota Nagpur Plateau region of Jharkhand.

The river flows eastward through the plateau fringe and plains before joining the Hooghly system.

8.1 Why Is Damodar Called the Sorrow of Bengal?

Historically, the Damodar experienced severe floods during the monsoon.

Heavy rainfall in its upper catchment caused sudden increases in river discharge.

Floodwaters frequently damaged agricultural fields, settlements and infrastructure in the lower basin.

Because of its destructive floods, the river became popularly known as the Sorrow of Bengal.

8.2 Damodar Valley Corporation

The Damodar Valley Corporation was established in 1948.

It was created to support integrated development of the Damodar Valley.

Its major functions include:

  • Flood moderation

  • Irrigation development

  • Power generation

  • Water management

  • Regional industrial development

Major upstream dams and reservoirs in the Damodar Valley system include Tilaiya, Konar, Maithon and Panchet.

These structures are associated with the wider Damodar–Barakar river system.

8.3 Durgapur Barrage

Durgapur Barrage is situated on the Damodar River in West Bengal.

It is an important component of irrigation and water regulation in the lower Damodar region.

The barrage should not be confused with the major upstream storage dams.

Exam trap: The Damodar Valley projects have helped moderate floods, but they have not completely eliminated flood risk.

9. Ajay River

The Ajay is an important river of the western plateau-fringe region.

It originates in the uplands of Jharkhand and flows eastward towards West Bengal.

The river is associated with the Rarh region and the districts of Birbhum and Paschim Bardhaman.

It eventually joins the Bhagirathi.

9.1 Characteristics

The Ajay exhibits seasonal variations in water flow.

During the monsoon, heavy rainfall may produce flooding.

In the dry season, the river's discharge is comparatively reduced.

The Ajay is important for understanding the relationship between the western uplands and the Gangetic plains.

10. Mayurakshi River

The Mayurakshi is an important river of western West Bengal.

It originates in the Trikut Hills region of Jharkhand.

The river flows towards West Bengal and is particularly associated with Birbhum and Murshidabad.

10.1 Massanjore Dam

Massanjore Dam is constructed across the Mayurakshi River.

Its location is in Jharkhand, not West Bengal.

This distinction is important because the Mayurakshi irrigation project benefits substantial agricultural areas of West Bengal.

The project supports irrigation in parts of Birbhum, Murshidabad and adjoining regions.

The West Bengal Irrigation & Waterways Department provides details of the Mayurakshi Reservoir Project and its irrigation infrastructure.

Important facts

  • River: Mayurakshi

  • Origin: Trikut Hills, Jharkhand

  • Important dam: Massanjore

  • Dam location: Jharkhand

It flows through parts of Bankura and Paschim Medinipur.

The river experiences significant seasonal variation.

11.3 Formation of Rupnarayan

The Dwarakeswar and Shilabati river systems meet in the Ghatal region, forming the Rupnarayan River.

The Rupnarayan subsequently flows towards the lower Hooghly estuarine system.

The lower basin is associated with agriculture, settlements and flood-prone lowlands.

Examination fact

Dwarakeswar + Shilabati → Rupnarayan

This relationship is particularly important for river-system questions.

12. Kangsabati River

The Kangsabati, also known as the Kasai, is an important river of southwestern West Bengal.

It originates in the western upland region associated with Purulia.

The river flows through parts of the plateau fringe and adjoining plains.

It originates near Ranchi in the Chota Nagpur Plateau region of Jharkhand.

The river flows through Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha before entering the Bay of Bengal.

14.1 Importance

The Subarnarekha drains part of the western and southwestern upland region.

It supports agriculture, settlements and local economic activities.

The river is important because its basin is distinct from the Bhagirathi–Hooghly drainage system.

Important facts

  • Origin: Near Ranchi, Jharkhand

  • States associated with its course: Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha

  • Mouth: Bay of Bengal

  • Drainage basin: Subarnarekha basin

Exam trap: The Subarnarekha is not a tributary of the Hooghly.

15. Jalangi, Churni, Mathabhanga and Ichamati

These rivers are associated with the complex distributary network of the Ganga–Padma system.

15.1 Jalangi River

The Jalangi is associated with the Ganga–Padma distributary network.

It flows through the Nadia–Murshidabad region and joins the Bhagirathi near Nabadwip.

It is important for understanding the historical drainage of the Gangetic plains.

15.2 Mathabhanga River

The Mathabhanga is a distributary associated with the Padma system.

It forms part of the river network connecting the Gangetic plains with the lower delta.

The river is influenced by the complex distributary and tidal drainage conditions of the region.

The lower Ichamati system is affected by tidal processes.

16. Rivers of the Sundarbans

The Sundarbans represent one of the most distinctive river environments in India.

The region forms part of the lower Ganga–Brahmaputra–Meghna delta.

Its drainage consists of numerous tidal rivers, estuarine channels and creeks.

Unlike typical freshwater rivers, many channels in the Sundarbans experience strong tidal movement.

16.1 Important Sundarbans Rivers and Channels

Major names associated with the Sundarbans include:

  1. Matla

  2. Raimangal

  3. Saptamukhi

  4. Thakuran

  5. Muriganga

  6. Bidyadhari

These waterways are important for the region's ecology and coastal geography.

16.2 Tidal Influence

Tides from the Bay of Bengal cause periodic changes in water levels.

Saline water may move inland through tidal channels.

The interaction of freshwater, seawater and sediments creates complex estuarine conditions.

16.3 Importance of Mangroves

Mangrove vegetation is adapted to saline and waterlogged environments.

Mangrove roots help stabilize sediments and provide habitats for aquatic organisms.

The vegetation also contributes to reducing the impacts of waves and coastal erosion in some locations.

However, mangroves do not eliminate the dangers posed by severe cyclones and storm surges.

16.4 Major Problems

The Sundarbans face several environmental challenges:

  • Cyclones

  • Storm surges

  • Salinity intrusion

  • Coastal erosion

  • Embankment damage

  • Drainage congestion

  • Changes in sediment movement

Exam trap: The rivers of the Sundarbans should not all be treated as ordinary freshwater tributaries.

17. Major River Projects of West Bengal

River-control and irrigation projects are important topics for competitive examinations.

17.1 Difference Between a Dam and a Barrage

A dam is generally constructed to obstruct and store water, often creating a reservoir.

A barrage is a gated structure used primarily to regulate water levels and divert or control river flow.

Both may support irrigation and water management, but their engineering functions are not identical.

18. Floods in West Bengal

Floods are among the most important geographical hazards affecting West Bengal.

Different regions experience flooding for different reasons.

18.1 Floods in North Bengal

North Bengal receives heavy monsoon rainfall.

Himalayan rivers may carry substantial volumes of water and sediment into the plains.

Sudden increases in discharge can cause flooding and riverbank erosion.

Foothill rivers may also change their channels.

18.2 Floods in the Gangetic Plains

The Gangetic plains are relatively flat.

During periods of heavy rainfall and high river discharge, floodwaters may spread across extensive low-lying areas.

Sediment deposition and inadequate drainage may increase flood-related problems.

18.3 Floods in Western West Bengal

Rivers such as the Damodar, Ajay and Mayurakshi may experience significant monsoon flooding.

Heavy rainfall in upstream catchments can contribute to high downstream discharge.

Reservoir operations and river-channel conditions influence flood behaviour.

18.4 Floods in the Sundarbans

Flooding in the Sundarbans may result from a combination of:

  • Heavy rainfall

  • High tides

  • Cyclones

  • Storm surges

  • Embankment breaches

This makes coastal flooding different from ordinary river flooding.

19. Riverbank Erosion

Riverbank erosion occurs when flowing water removes soil and sediment from riverbanks.

It is an important environmental and socioeconomic problem in West Bengal.

19.1 Ganga–Padma Erosion

The Malda and Murshidabad regions are particularly associated with serious riverbank erosion.

Changes in river channels and sediment movement may cause the loss of agricultural land and settlements.

Riverbank erosion can lead to displacement of communities and damage to infrastructure.

19.2 Causes of Riverbank Erosion

Important causes include:

  1. Strong river currents

  2. Seasonal increases in discharge

  3. Unstable alluvial banks

  4. Channel migration

  5. Changes in sediment transport

  6. Local changes in river geometry

19.3 Erosion Control

Common approaches include:

  • Riverbank protection works

  • Vegetation-based stabilization

  • Appropriate embankment design

  • Monitoring channel changes

  • Floodplain planning

  • Restricting vulnerable construction where necessary

No single intervention can completely prevent erosion across an entire river system.

20. Sedimentation and Drainage Congestion

Rivers transport sediment from their catchments.

When flow velocity decreases, some of this sediment is deposited.

Sedimentation can alter river depth, channel capacity and drainage patterns.

In low-gradient areas, drainage congestion may occur when rainwater cannot flow away efficiently.

This can produce prolonged waterlogging.

Sedimentation is a natural process, but its effects may be intensified by changes in land use, channel conditions and infrastructure.

21. Importance of Rivers in West Bengal's Economy

21.1 Agriculture

Rivers provide water for irrigation.

Alluvial deposits also contribute to the development of agricultural soils.

However, agricultural productivity depends on several factors, including drainage, soil quality, rainfall and water availability.

21.2 Industry

Industries require water for manufacturing, processing and cooling.

The Hooghly and Damodar regions have historically supported major industrial development.

21.3 Transportation

The Hooghly River has played an important role in inland and maritime transportation.

The river system is closely associated with Kolkata's historical commercial development.

21.4 Fisheries

Rivers, wetlands and estuarine environments support fisheries and aquatic biodiversity.

21.5 Ecology

Rivers maintain wetlands, floodplains and aquatic ecosystems.

They are also important for groundwater recharge and sediment transport in many areas.

22. Environmental Challenges

West Bengal's rivers face several environmental pressures.

Water Pollution

Untreated sewage, industrial discharge and other pollutants can affect river-water quality.

Excessive Sedimentation

Sediment accumulation may interfere with navigation and drainage.

Encroachment

Construction and land-use changes in flood-prone areas may increase vulnerability.

Loss of Wetlands

Wetland degradation can reduce natural water-storage and ecological functions.

Climate-Related Risks

Changes in rainfall patterns, extreme precipitation, sea-level rise and cyclone-related hazards can affect river and coastal environments.

Effective river management therefore requires coordination between irrigation, environmental protection, urban planning and disaster management.
