Why in News?
Research associated with Himachal Pradesh University highlighted the potential of Sal trees in reducing air pollution because of characteristics such as dense foliage, leaf surfaces capable of trapping particles and their tolerance to environmental stress.
Scientific Name
The scientific name of Sal is Shorea robusta. It belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae.
Distribution in India
Sal is naturally distributed across large parts of northern, central and eastern India. Important regions include Uttarakhand, the Terai belt of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.
Not Endemic to Western Ghats
Sal is not endemic to the Western Ghats. Its major natural distribution is associated with northern, central and eastern Indian forests. This distinction is important for examination questions.
Climate
Sal generally grows well in warm and humid climatic conditions. It can occur from plains to hilly regions and can grow at elevations reaching roughly 1,500 metres under suitable conditions.
Temperature
