Geography of West Bengal: Physiographic Divisions

1. Introduction

West Bengal possesses remarkable geographical diversity. Although its total area is only 88,752 square kilometres, the state includes Himalayan mountains, foothill plains, river valleys, ancient uplands, fertile alluvial plains, deltaic wetlands, mangrove forests and coastal landscapes.

The state extends from the Eastern Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south.

This variation in relief influences:

  • Temperature and rainfall

  • River systems and drainage

  • Soil formation

  • Agricultural activities

  • Natural vegetation

  • Human settlements

  • Transportation networks

  • Tourism

  • Natural hazards

For competitive examinations, students must understand not only the names of geographical regions but also their characteristics, locations and economic importance.

2. Meaning of Physiography

Physiography refers to the study and description of the natural physical features of the Earth's surface.

These features include mountains, hills, plateaus, plains, valleys and coastal landforms.

A physiographic division is an area having relatively similar physical characteristics, such as relief, elevation, geological structure and landform development.

Physiography versus Geology

Physiography describes the present appearance and characteristics of the land surface.

Geology studies the rocks, structures and processes responsible for its formation.

For example, the Darjeeling Himalayas are a physiographic region, while the tectonic processes responsible for Himalayan mountain building belong to geology.

3. Major Physiographic Divisions of West Bengal

For general competitive examinations, West Bengal can be studied through the following broad regions:

  1. Darjeeling Himalayan Region

  2. Terai Region

  3. Dooars Region

  4. Northern Plains and Barind Region

  5. Western Plateau and Highlands

  6. Rarh Region

  7. Gangetic Plains

  8. Deltaic Plains and Sundarbans

  9. Coastal Plains

These categories are useful for learning. Their boundaries may overlap, and different academic or government publications sometimes group them differently.

4. Darjeeling Himalayan Region

4.1 Location

The Himalayan region occupies the northernmost mountainous part of West Bengal.

It is principally associated with the hill areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.

The region forms part of the Eastern Himalayas.

4.2 Important Physical Characteristics

The region contains:

  • Steep mountain slopes

  • Deep valleys

  • High ridges

  • Narrow river valleys

  • Forest-covered hills

  • Numerous mountain streams

The landscape has been shaped by tectonic activity, river erosion and weathering.

4.3 Singalila Range

The Singalila Range is an important mountain range along the western side of the Darjeeling Himalayan region.

It forms part of the mountainous boundary region between India and Nepal.

The range is especially important because it contains Sandakphu.

4.4 Sandakphu

Sandakphu, also written Sandakfu, is the highest point in West Bengal.

Its commonly reported elevation is approximately 3,636 metres above sea level.

Examination fact: Sandakphu is the highest point of West Bengal, not Kanchenjunga.

Kanchenjunga is a much higher Himalayan mountain associated with the Sikkim–Nepal border region.

4.5 Important Rivers

The Teesta is one of the major rivers associated with the northern Himalayan landscape.

Other important rivers and streams include the Rangeet and numerous tributaries.

These rivers often have steep gradients in mountainous sections.

Consequently, they can transport large quantities of sediment during heavy rainfall.

4.6 Climate

The Himalayan region generally experiences cooler temperatures than the southern plains.

However, climatic conditions vary considerably with altitude.

Higher elevations are cooler, while lower valleys may experience relatively warm and humid conditions.

Heavy monsoon rainfall is an important feature.

4.7 Vegetation

Vegetation changes with altitude, temperature and rainfall.

Depending on elevation and local conditions, the region supports subtropical, temperate and higher-altitude vegetation.

4.8 Economic Importance

Important activities include:

Tea cultivation: Darjeeling tea is internationally recognised.

Tourism: Darjeeling, Kalimpong and surrounding hill areas attract visitors.

Horticulture: Suitable climatic conditions support several fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants.

Forestry and biodiversity: Mountain ecosystems support valuable biological resources.

4.9 Environmental Problems

The region is vulnerable to:

  • Landslides

  • Slope erosion

  • Road damage

  • Forest degradation

  • Intense rainfall events

  • Pressure from construction on unstable slopes

Landslide risk depends on geology, slope angle, rainfall, drainage and human intervention.

Examination Trap

Question: Is the entire Darjeeling district mountainous?

Answer: No. Darjeeling district also contains foothill and plain areas, particularly around Siliguri.

5. Terai Region

5.1 Meaning

The Terai is a foothill landscape situated immediately south of the Himalayan mountains.

It represents a transition between the steep Himalayan slopes and the adjoining plains.

5.2 Location in West Bengal

The Terai is particularly associated with the foothill region of Darjeeling district, including areas around Siliguri.

5.3 Physical Characteristics

Important features include:

  • Gently sloping foothill terrain

  • River-deposited sediments

  • Streams descending from the Himalayas

  • Areas with substantial groundwater influence

  • Fertile soils in suitable locations

The region has been shaped largely by material transported from the Himalayan mountains.

5.4 Formation

Mountain rivers carry gravel, sand, silt and other sediments.

As the rivers descend towards flatter terrain, their velocity and sediment-carrying capacity change.

The transported material is deposited in foothill and plain environments.

Over long periods, these processes create alluvial fans and related depositional landforms.

5.5 Agricultural Importance

The Terai supports agriculture where soils, water availability and land conditions are favourable.

Tea cultivation is also important in parts of the wider foothill landscape.

5.6 Environmental Importance

The Terai forms an ecological transition between mountain forests and the plains.

It is important for biodiversity, river systems and groundwater.

Examination Trap

The Terai and Dooars are closely related foothill regions, but the terms are not always interchangeable.

In common West Bengal geography, the Terai is especially associated with the foothills around Darjeeling and Siliguri.

6. Dooars Region

6.1 Meaning

The term Dooars is associated with the idea of gateways or doors.

Historically, the region provided routes between the plains and Bhutan.

6.2 Location

The Dooars occupies an important part of the Himalayan foothills in northern West Bengal.

It is associated especially with the Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar areas and adjoining foothill landscapes.

The region lies broadly east of the Teesta towards the Sankosh River.

6.3 Physical Characteristics

7. Northern Plains and Barind Region

7.1 Northern Plains

South of the Himalayan foothills, extensive plains develop through the deposition of river sediments.

Important districts associated with the wider northern plain landscape include Cooch Behar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda, although their physical characteristics are not identical.

7.2 Alluvial Formation

Rivers carry sediments from upland regions and deposit them in lower areas.

Over time, these deposits contribute to the formation of alluvial plains.

Alluvial soils often support intensive agriculture.

7.3 Barind Region

The Barind, also called Barendrabhumi, is an older alluvial upland region associated with parts of northern Bengal.

In West Bengal, it is particularly relevant to portions of Malda and adjoining northern districts.

The region differs from younger floodplains in its relatively elevated surfaces and older soil characteristics.

7.4 Older versus Newer Alluvium

Older alluvium: Generally represents older river deposits and relatively elevated surfaces.

Newer alluvium: Usually associated with more recent river deposition and active floodplain environments.

However, the exact geological age and classification of deposits require local geological evidence.

7.5 Agricultural Importance

The northern plains support several crops, including rice and other food crops.

Agricultural patterns depend on irrigation, soil type, rainfall and local drainage.

Examination Trap

The Barind is not a Himalayan mountain region.

It is associated with older alluvial uplands.

8. Western Plateau and Highlands

8.1 Location

The western part of West Bengal contains plateau fringes, low hills and undulating uplands.

These areas are associated with the eastern extensions and margins of the Chota Nagpur Plateau.

Important areas include parts of:

  • Purulia

  • Bankura

  • Jhargram

8.4 Geological Characteristics

The western uplands contain older geological formations than the younger alluvial plains of much of eastern and southern West Bengal.

Weathering and erosion have shaped the present relief.

8.5 Soil

Red and lateritic soils are common in many western upland areas.

These soils often contain iron oxides, which contribute to their reddish colour.

Their agricultural productivity depends on soil depth, moisture, organic matter and management practices.

8.6 Climate

Many western upland areas experience comparatively hot summers.

Rainfall and water availability vary across the region.

Seasonal water scarcity can affect agriculture in some locations.

8.7 Economic Importance

The region is associated with:

  • Agriculture

  • Mining and mineral-related activities in suitable areas

  • Forest resources

  • Industrial activity

  • Tourism

  • Traditional rural livelihoods

8.8 Environmental Problems

Important issues include:

  • Soil erosion

  • Land degradation

  • Seasonal water scarcity

9.4 Agricultural Importance

Agriculture varies according to rainfall, soil fertility and irrigation.

Rice cultivation is important in suitable areas.

9.5 Historical Importance

The Rarh region also appears in historical and cultural discussions of Bengal.

Students should distinguish the historical use of the term from its physical-geographical use.

Examination Trap

Rarh is not simply another name for the entire Chota Nagpur Plateau.

It is a transitional geographical region of Bengal.

10. Gangetic Plains

10.1 Location

The Gangetic plains occupy a substantial portion of West Bengal.

They are associated with the Ganga and its distributaries and tributaries.

10.2 Formation

The plains developed through prolonged deposition of river sediments.

These sediments include sand, silt and clay.

Repeated deposition and river-channel changes have produced extensive lowland landscapes.

10.3 Major Rivers

Important rivers include:

  • Ganga

  • Bhagirathi–Hooghly

  • Jalangi

  • Churni

  • Damodar

  • Ajay

  • Mayurakshi

The precise river network varies geographically, and not all these rivers belong to the same drainage category.

10.4 Agricultural Importance

The plains are important for:

  • Rice cultivation

  • Jute cultivation

  • Vegetable production

  • Other field crops

  • Irrigated agriculture

The fertility of many alluvial soils and the availability of water support intensive agricultural activity.

10.5 Settlement and Transport

Flat terrain generally facilitates:

  • Road construction

  • Railway development

  • Urban settlements

  • Industrial locations

  • Agricultural marketing

However, rivers, wetlands and flood-prone areas can create engineering and environmental challenges.

10.6 Flooding

The Gangetic plains experience flooding in some areas due to:

  • Heavy rainfall

  • High river discharge

  • Drainage congestion

  • Riverbank erosion

  • Sedimentation

  • Human alteration of natural drainage

Flooding is not uniform across the entire region.

Examination Trap

Alluvial plains are not automatically free from floods.

In fact, many fertile floodplains experience periodic inundation.

11. Deltaic Plains of West Bengal

11.1 Meaning of a Delta

A delta is a depositional landform developed near a river mouth where sediment accumulates and river channels may divide into distributaries.

Delta formation depends on sediment supply, river discharge, waves, tides and coastal processes.

11.2 Bengal Delta

Southern West Bengal forms part of the wider Ganga–Brahmaputra–Meghna delta system.

The delta extends beyond India into Bangladesh.

11.3 Physical Characteristics

The deltaic landscape includes:

  • Low-lying plains

11.4 Upper and Lower Delta

For geographical study, the delta may be discussed in terms of upper and lower sections.

Upper delta: Generally experiences less direct tidal influence than coastal sections.

Lower delta: More strongly influenced by tides, saline water and coastal processes.

11.5 Active and Less Active Deltaic Areas

Some deltaic areas receive relatively active sediment deposition.

Other areas may contain older or less active distributary systems.

Terms such as active, mature and moribund delta are used in geomorphological literature, but their boundaries depend on the classification adopted.

11.6 Agriculture

Agriculture in deltaic regions depends on:

They can transport coarse sediments and cause significant erosion.

Western Upland Rivers

Rivers draining the western plateau fringe often respond strongly to seasonal rainfall.

Their flow patterns may vary substantially between the monsoon and dry seasons.

Plain Rivers

Rivers entering flatter terrain generally experience reduced gradients.

They may develop meanders, floodplains and depositional features.

Deltaic Rivers

In the lower delta, tidal influence becomes increasingly important.

Distributaries, estuaries and tidal creeks shape the landscape.

15. Relationship Between Physiography and Soil

Different landscapes support different soil-forming environments.
