Which Harappan site is famous for archaeological evidence of a ploughed field?
Correct Answer
A. KalibanganA.
Explanation
Kalibangan in Rajasthan is famous for archaeological evidence interpreted as a ploughed agricultural field.
The site is located in the Ghaggar river region and contains remains of both pre-Harappan and Mature Harappan phases.
Archaeologists discovered intersecting furrow marks in a field near the settlement.
These furrows provide rare direct archaeological evidence of agricultural practices in the Harappan cultural world.
The intersecting pattern has been interpreted as indicating a method of cultivating more than one crop or organizing fields systematically.
Kalibangan is also famous for structures generally described as fire altars, making it important for discussions of Harappan ritual life.
The settlement consisted of fortified areas and displayed features of planned habitation.
Important examination associations are: Kalibangan—Rajasthan—ploughed field—fire altars; Lothal—Gujarat—dockyard-like basin; Mohenjo-daro—Great Bath; Dholavira—water reservoirs.
Agriculture formed the basic economic foundation of the Harappan Civilization.
Wheat and barley were important crops, while pulses, sesame and cotton were also cultivated.
Agricultural production supported large urban populations and enabled specialization in crafts, trade and other occupations.
