Which Harappan site is located in Haryana and is regarded as one of the largest Harappan settlements?
Correct Answer
A. RakhigarhiA.
Explanation
Rakhigarhi is an important Harappan site located in Hisar district of Haryana.
It is regarded as one of the largest known settlements belonging to the Harappan Civilization.
The archaeological complex consists of several mounds and has yielded evidence of habitation, drainage, brick structures, craft activities, seals, pottery, ornaments and burials.
Rakhigarhi is particularly significant because it demonstrates the enormous geographical spread of the Harappan cultural tradition beyond the Indus River valley itself.
Harappan settlements extended through large parts of present-day Pakistan and northwestern India.
Archaeological and bioarchaeological studies at Rakhigarhi have also contributed to research on ancient population history.
Haryana contains several other important Harappan sites, including Banawali and Bhirrana.
Students should distinguish Rakhigarhi from other geographically important sites: Alamgirpur is in Uttar Pradesh and is conventionally associated with the eastern extent of Harappan cultural distribution; Dholavira is in Gujarat and is famous for reservoirs; Lothal is also in Gujarat and is associated with a dockyard-like structure.
Rakhigarhi is therefore a particularly important site for questions concerning the size and Indian distribution of the Harappan Civilization.
