Which Harappan site is especially known as a major centre of bead-making and craft production?
Correct Answer
A. ChanhudaroA.
Explanation
Chanhudaro, located in Sindh, is especially associated with craft production, including bead-making.
Archaeological excavations revealed workshops and evidence connected with the manufacture of beads, shell objects, seals and other small artifacts.
The settlement is interesting because, unlike major cities such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, it is generally described as lacking a prominent fortified citadel-like division.
Its economy appears to have been strongly connected with specialized crafts.
Harappan artisans used materials such as carnelian, agate, shell, faience, copper and steatite to produce ornaments and other objects.
Beads were carefully shaped, drilled and polished, requiring considerable technical expertise.
Finished ornaments formed part of both local consumption and long-distance exchange.
Lothal was also a major bead-making centre, so students should recognize that bead production was not confined to a single settlement.
Chanhudaro, however, is particularly famous in standard examination literature as a specialized craft-production centre.
The presence of specialized workshops in Harappan cities indicates occupational differentiation and an economy more complex than simple subsistence agriculture.
Standardized weights and seals probably helped regulate commercial transactions and movement of goods.
