A. XuanzangA. ह्वेनसांग/युआन च्वांग

Xuanzang, also rendered in older Indian textbooks as Hiuen Tsang or Yuan Chwang, was a Chinese Buddhist monk and pilgrim who travelled through India in the seventh century CE during the reign of Harshavardhana.
He studied at Nalanda and was associated with the scholar Shilabhadra.
His travel account provides valuable information on political conditions, geography, Buddhist institutions, religious practices and education.
Xuanzang collected Buddhist manuscripts and later contributed to their translation into Chinese after returning home.
Faxian visited India earlier, during the Gupta period, primarily in the early fifth century CE.
Megasthenes was a Greek ambassador at the Mauryan court centuries earlier, while Al-Biruni came to India in the eleventh century.
Chronology is therefore crucial in questions involving foreign travellers.
