Under him Magadha emerged as one of the most powerful Mahajanapadas.
He pursued territorial expansion, most famously conquering Anga, and also used matrimonial diplomacy to strengthen his position.
Buddhist and Jain texts both preserve traditions about Bimbisara, although details sometimes differ between textual traditions.
He was succeeded by Ajatashatru, another major Haryanka ruler, who further expanded Magadha and fought against Kosala and the Vajji confederacy.
