Which clan was a prominent constituent of the Vajji confederacy?
Correct Answer
A. LicchavisA.
Explanation
The Licchavis were one of the most prominent groups within the Vajji confederacy.
Their principal centre was Vaishali in present-day Bihar.
The Vajji political system is commonly classified as a gana-sangha, meaning that political authority was shared among a body of leading clan members rather than concentrated in a single hereditary monarch in the conventional sense.
This should not automatically be equated with a modern democratic republic, because political participation was limited and social structures were very different.
Buddhist and Jain traditions both attach considerable importance to Vaishali.
Mahavira had family connections with the broader Vajji-Licchavi environment, and Buddha visited Vaishali on several occasions.
Ajatashatru's conquest of the Vajji confederacy became a major step in Magadha's rise.
For exams: Vajji—Vaishali—Licchavi—gana-sangha.
