ENGLISH SECTION

Introduction

Subhas Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji, was one of the most prominent leaders of the Indian freedom struggle.

He believed that British colonial rule had to be ended decisively and was prepared to use methods different from the predominantly non-violent mass struggle associated with Mahatma Gandhi.

Bose served as President of the Indian National Congress, established the Forward Bloc, sought international support for India's independence during the Second World War, assumed leadership of the Indian National Army (INA/Azad Hind Fauj) and proclaimed the Provisional Government of Free India (Azad Hind).

His political and military activities during the Second World War made him one of the most distinctive figures of India's anti-colonial movement.

Birth and Family

Subhas Chandra Bose was born on:

23 January 1897

at:

Cuttack

which is now in Odisha.

At the time, Cuttack was part of the Bengal Presidency under British rule.

His father:

Janakinath Bose

was a prominent lawyer.

His mother was:

Prabhavati Devi

Bose grew up in a large and well-established family.

Education

Bose was an academically talented student.

He studied at institutions including:

  • Presidency College, Calcutta,

  • Scottish Church College,

  • University of Cambridge in Britain.

He developed a strong interest in Indian nationalism and was influenced by the writings and ideas of figures such as:

Swami Vivekananda

and:

Ramakrishna Paramahansa

Vivekananda's emphasis on strength, service and national regeneration had a significant intellectual influence on Bose.

Indian Civil Service

One of the most important facts about Bose's early career concerns the:

Indian Civil Service (ICS)

He went to England and successfully competed in the ICS examination.

However, he did not want to serve permanently under the colonial administration.

He eventually resigned from the civil service path in:

1921

and returned to India to participate more directly in the national movement.

Exam Point

Subhas Chandra Bose qualified for the ICS but resigned rather than pursue a career in the British colonial administration.

Entry into the Freedom Movement

After returning to India, Bose became associated with:

Chittaranjan Das (C.R. Das)

a prominent nationalist leader from Bengal.

C.R. Das became an important political mentor to Bose.

Bose became increasingly active in:

  • nationalist politics,

  • municipal administration,

  • youth mobilisation,

  • Congress activities.

Bose and the Indian National Congress

Subhas Chandra Bose rose rapidly within the:

Indian National Congress

He represented a more militant and radical strand of anti-colonial nationalism and favoured stronger mobilisation against British rule.

He was elected Congress President twice:

1938 – Haripura Session

and

1939 – Tripuri Session

These two sessions are extremely important for competitive examinations.

Haripura Session – 1938

Bose was elected President of the Indian National Congress at the:

Haripura Session

in:

1938

His presidential address reflected his interest in:

  • economic planning,

  • industrialisation,

  • science and technology,

  • modernisation,

  • social and economic reconstruction.

During his presidency, the Congress established a:

National Planning Committee

with:

Jawaharlal Nehru

as its chairman.

Exam Pair

Haripura – 1938 – Subhas Chandra Bose

Tripuri Session – 1939

Bose sought another term as Congress President in:

1939

He defeated:

Pattabhi Sitaramayya

in the presidential election.

However, Bose faced serious political differences with the Gandhian leadership of the Congress.

The disagreement concerned issues including:

  • political strategy,

  • organisational leadership,

  • methods of confronting British rule,

  • the international situation.

Bose ultimately resigned from the Congress presidency.

Exam Pair

Tripuri – 1939 – Subhas Chandra Bose

Forward Bloc

After leaving the Congress presidency, Bose established the:

Forward Bloc

in:

1939

It initially sought to consolidate the more radical and left-oriented forces within the nationalist movement.

Exam Formula

Forward Bloc → Subhas Chandra Bose → 1939

Second World War

The:

Second World War

began in 1939.

Bose believed Britain's involvement in a major international war created an opportunity for India's independence struggle.

His strategy increasingly differed from that of the mainstream Congress leadership.

He wanted to exploit Britain's wartime difficulties to advance the struggle against colonial rule.

House Arrest and Escape

British authorities detained Bose because of his political activities.

He was eventually placed under surveillance/house arrest in Calcutta.

In:

January 1941

Bose made a dramatic escape from his residence.

He travelled through a complex route that eventually took him outside British-controlled India.

His journey ultimately led him toward:

  • Afghanistan,

  • the Soviet sphere,

  • Germany.

Bose in Germany

During the Second World War, Bose reached:

Germany

There he sought international assistance for India's independence.

Among the initiatives associated with his period in Europe were:

  • Free India Centre,

  • Azad Hind Radio,

  • Indian Legion.

Through radio broadcasts, Bose addressed Indians and promoted resistance to British colonial rule.

From Germany to Southeast Asia

The centre of Bose's wartime strategy later shifted from Europe to:

Southeast Asia

because a large Indian population and Indian prisoners of war were present there and Japan had captured substantial British-controlled territory.

Bose travelled from Europe toward Asia in a remarkable wartime submarine journey involving German and Japanese submarines.

He eventually reached Southeast Asia in:

1943

Indian National Army – Important Correction

A common exam mistake is:

“Subhas Chandra Bose founded the INA.”

This is not completely accurate.

The first INA was organised in Southeast Asia under:

Captain Mohan Singh

with Indian prisoners of war and expatriate support.

The broader political mobilisation of Indians in Southeast Asia was also associated with:

Rash Behari Bose

Subhas Chandra Bose later arrived in Southeast Asia and took leadership of the movement.

He:

  • reorganised,

  • revitalised,

  • expanded,

  • politically and militarily led

the INA.

Therefore, the safest exam statement is:

Subhas Chandra Bose reorganised and led the Indian National Army.

Rash Behari Bose

Do not confuse:

Rash Behari Bose

with:

Subhas Chandra Bose

Rash Behari Bose was an older revolutionary nationalist who had lived in Japan.

He played an important role in organising the:

Indian Independence League

and in the political circumstances surrounding the early INA.

Leadership was later handed over to Subhas Chandra Bose.

INA – Indian National Army

The INA is popularly known in India as:

Azad Hind Fauj

Under Netaji's leadership, it became a major symbol of armed resistance against British rule.

The INA's goal was:

India's independence from British rule

through armed struggle in conjunction with the wartime situation in Asia.

Provisional Government of Azad Hind

One of Bose's most important political actions was the proclamation of the:

Provisional Government of Free India

also known as:

Arzi Hukumat-e-Azad Hind

or:

Azad Hind Government

It was proclaimed in:

Singapore

on:

21 October 1943

Government of India cultural records commemorate 21 October as the date on which Netaji proclaimed the formation of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind.

Bose's Position in the Azad Hind Government

Subhas Chandra Bose served as the principal leader of the provisional government and held important responsibilities including leadership connected with:

  • Head of State,

  • Prime Minister,

  • War,

  • Foreign Affairs.

The government sought international recognition and presented itself as the political authority fighting for India's liberation.

Recognition of Azad Hind Government

The Provisional Government received recognition from several governments aligned with or associated with the Axis wartime bloc.

Its international position must be understood within the geopolitical circumstances of:

World War II

Bose's cooperation with Germany and Japan was driven by his strategy of seeking foreign assistance against British colonial rule, but those alliances also remain an important and debated part of the historical assessment of his wartime strategy.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

During the war, Japan transferred nominal authority over the:

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

to the Provisional Government of Azad Hind.

Bose visited the islands in:

December 1943

He associated the names:

Shaheed

and:

Swaraj

with the islands.

This episode is frequently asked in competitive examinations.

Rani of Jhansi Regiment

A remarkable feature of the INA was its women's regiment:

Rani of Jhansi Regiment

It was commanded by:

Captain Lakshmi Swaminathan

later widely known as:

Lakshmi Sahgal

The regiment was named after:

Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi

and became an important symbol of women's participation in the armed nationalist struggle.

Government cultural material identifies the Rani of Jhansi Regiment as the women's regiment of the INA.

INA's Military Campaign

The INA fought alongside Japanese forces in the Burma-India theatre during World War II.

Its campaign advanced toward India's northeastern frontier.

The battles associated with:

Imphal

and:

Kohima

in 1944 became decisive.

Japanese and INA forces were eventually forced to retreat.

Reasons included:

  • Allied military resistance,

  • difficult terrain,

  • monsoon conditions,

  • stretched supply lines,

  • shortage of food and equipment,

  • deterioration of Japan's military position.

“Delhi Chalo”

One of the expressions strongly associated with Bose and the INA was:

“Delhi Chalo”

or:

“On to Delhi”

It symbolised the INA's objective of advancing toward the centre of British power in India.

“Give Me Blood…”

Bose's most famous call is remembered as:

“Give me blood, and I will give you freedom.”

It became one of the most famous slogans associated with India's revolutionary nationalist tradition.

“Jai Hind”

“Jai Hind”

became strongly associated with the INA and Netaji and was popularised as a national salutation.

An important nuance for exams is that students should be cautious with questions asking who “invented” the phrase versus who popularised it.

The safest formulation is:

Netaji and the INA popularised “Jai Hind” as a national salutation.

“Ittehad, Itmad, Qurbani”

Another motto associated with the INA was:

Ittehad, Itmad, Qurbani

meaning broadly:

Unity, Faith, Sacrifice

These ideas reflected the INA's emphasis on unity across regional and religious identities.

Bose's Political Ideas

Bose strongly favoured:

  • complete independence,

  • strong national unity,

  • economic planning,

  • industrialisation,

  • scientific development,

  • social reform,

  • mobilisation of youth,

  • resistance to colonial rule.

His vision of post-colonial development placed considerable emphasis on:

Planning and industrial modernisation

Bose and Mahatma Gandhi

Bose and Mahatma Gandhi shared the ultimate objective of:

Indian independence

but differed significantly over political methods and strategy.

Gandhi

Emphasised:

  • non-violence,

  • satyagraha,

  • mass civil resistance.

Bose

Was prepared to pursue:

  • militant resistance,

  • armed struggle,

  • international alliances against Britain.

Their differences were substantial, but reducing their relationship simply to personal hostility would be historically misleading.

Bose and Jawaharlal Nehru

Bose and Nehru shared interests in:

  • socialism,

  • economic planning,

  • industrial development,

  • anti-imperialism.

However, their political strategies and responses to the international situation during World War II diverged considerably.

Bose and Axis Powers

This topic needs careful historical wording.

During World War II, Bose sought support from:

Germany

and later:

Japan

against the British Empire.

His strategic reasoning was that Britain's wartime enemies could provide military and diplomatic assistance for India's liberation.

However, Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan were authoritarian and expansionist powers responsible for major wartime aggression and atrocities.

Therefore, Bose's wartime alliances remain a subject of historical debate.

For examinations, the factual point is:

Bose sought German and Japanese assistance against British rule during World War II.

Reported Death – 18 August 1945

Bose was reported to have died on:

18 August 1945

following an aircraft crash at:

Taihoku

in Japanese-ruled Taiwan, now Taipei.

However, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and reported death became the subject of decades of public controversy and official inquiries.

For this reason, the safest exam wording is:

Reported death: 18 August 1945; circumstances historically disputed.

Investigations Into Bose's Disappearance

The question of Bose's fate led to multiple official investigations over the decades.

Because of continuing public and scholarly interest, the Government of India eventually declassified large numbers of records relating to Netaji.

The National Archives of India states that the first set of declassified files was transferred in 2015 and that digital copies of 100 files were released publicly on 23 January 2016, followed by further batches.

The National Archives also maintains extensive Netaji-related holdings and research material.

Parakram Diwas

In contemporary India:

23 January

Netaji's birth anniversary is observed as:

Parakram Diwas

For exams remember:

23 January → Subhas Chandra Bose → Parakram Diwas

1939

में:

Forward Bloc

  • Free India Centre,

  • Azad Hind Radio,

  • Indian Legion.

Indian Independence League

Provisional Government of Free India

“Give me blood, and I will give you freedom.”

Ittehad, Itmad, Qurbani
