Why is the All India Official Language Conference in News?
The 6th All India Official Language Conference was held in Mumbai on 14 September 2026 as part of the annual Hindi Diwas celebrations. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah addressed the inaugural session.
The conference brought together representatives from government departments, ministries, education, literature and public institutions to discuss the use and promotion of Indian languages in official work.
When Did the Conference Series Begin?
The Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs has been organising the All India Official Language Conference annually since 2021.
The objective is to provide a national platform for discussion on the implementation of India's official-language policy and the use of Hindi along with other Indian languages in governance.
Why Was Mumbai Chosen?
The 2026 conference was organised in Mumbai, giving special emphasis to the historical and cultural relationship between Hindi and Maharashtra's linguistic traditions.
Maharashtra has produced important literary, social and nationalist movements, and the conference highlighted the wider role of Indian languages in strengthening cultural communication.
Hindi Diwas Connection
The conference coincides with Hindi Diwas, observed every year on 14 September. On 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Union.
The day is therefore used to promote awareness about India's official-language provisions and the use of Hindi in administration.
Official Language versus National Language
Hindi is the official language of the Union under Article 343 of the Constitution. The Constitution does not declare Hindi, or any other language, as the national language of India.
This distinction is frequently tested in competitive examinations.
Role of the Department of Official Language
The Department of Official Language functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It is responsible for implementing constitutional provisions and laws relating to the progressive use of Hindi for official purposes of the Union.
It also monitors official-language implementation across ministries, departments and public-sector organisations.
Official Languages Act, 1963
The Official Languages Act, 1963 provides for the continued use of English along with Hindi for specified official purposes of the Union.
The Act became important in maintaining administrative continuity and accommodating India's linguistic diversity.
Article 351
Article 351 directs the Union to promote the spread of Hindi and develop it so that it may serve as a medium of expression for India's composite culture.
At the same time, India's constitutional system recognises and protects the country's wider linguistic diversity.
Eighth Schedule
The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution currently contains 22 languages. These include Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Kannada, Malayalam and several others.
The Schedule has expanded from the original 14 languages included when the Constitution came into force.
Importance of Mother Tongue
Speakers at the 2026 conference emphasised the importance of mother-tongue education and the wider use of Indian languages in public administration.
Language policy is increasingly linked with education, technology, translation and digital-governance platforms.
Technology and Indian Languages
Artificial intelligence, machine translation and speech technologies are creating new opportunities for governance in Indian languages.
Digital tools can make public services more accessible to citizens who are more comfortable communicating in their mother tongue.
